Genoa. Several teams of firefighters from the San Benigno headquarters at around two in the evening that had just passed, intervened at the nearby Chiapella pier, in the port (in front of the terminal) to release smoke from the hold of a ferry. Coast Guard safety inspectors and Rina technicians were also on site to assess the conditions of the ferry.
The ship, the Athara Tirrenia, had sailed from Genoa and was heading to Porto Torres, Sardinia, carrying mainly heavy vehicles, but returned to port due to the smoke that suddenly developed. The ship had 176 passengers and 42 crew on board. The problems occurred when the Athara was 40 nautical miles off the coast of Liguria.

Fortunately, the ship’s fire suppression system contained the flames. To complete the stop, it was necessarily decided to disembark all the vehicles on board. There were no injuries.
From a first reconstruction – still to be confirmed – the flames would have initially affected a refrigerated cargo and then would have spread to the adjacent vehicles (about twenty, with more or less obvious damage, including vehicles and trailers).
The shipping company is organizing the transfer of passengers to another unit to resume the trip during the day. For the Athara there is a stop for the necessary investigations and the subsequent restoration of safe navigability conditions.
