Biden’s first challenges. Defeat the Republicans and storm Georgia

NY Joe biden manages to divide the republican party. For the first time a month and a half after the vote, the president-elect receives the recognition of the second leader from the right after Donald trump. IS Mitch McConnell, the leader in the Senate who commands the majority in that branch of Congress, to make the grand gesture: “The constituency has spoken.”

McConnell, who until yesterday had remained aligned with Trump and had not disassociated himself from his battles to invalidate the vote, has decided to move forward. After all 50 US states have officially certified constituency results, as required by the Constitution, for McConnell the game is closed.

The leader of the Republican senators warned his party comrades not to pursue other unrealistic deviations, such as a congressional petition against the electoral district. By a curious coincidence, McConnell’s gesture yesterday coincided with that of Vladimir Putin: Even the Russian leader has decided to recognize Biden as the next president of the United States.

The turning point of the electoral college was greeted by the president-elect with a speech with new tones: including a harsh criticism of his predecessor. “In this battle for the soul of the United States – said Biden – democracy prevailed: the people voted, faith in our institutions was maintained … now is the time to turn the page, to unite, to heal.” The Democrat called Trump’s attitude “reckless, irresponsible” as he continues to delegitimize a regular election.

Trump’s army, however, is losing its pieces and on Monday night it was the turn of the Minister of Justice, William Barr, the latest in a long line of “excellent graduates.” A controversial figure, he was accused by Democrats of having done everything possible to protect the president at the time of impeachment. But recently Barr had to fear “friendly fire” above all.

It is your president who has attacked you in recent weeks. With two rounds of accusations. On the one hand, Trump took it out on him because the Justice Department would not sufficiently investigate the alleged electoral fraud. Trump upped the ante by accusing Barr of not giving enough importance, or publicity, to get in trouble with the justice of Hunter biden, son of the president-elect, on whom at least one Delaware prosecutor’s investigation for alleged tax crimes depends.

Biden announced another symbolic appointment yesterday: he appointed Pete buttigieg as Minister of Transportation, a crucial position to rebuild a sector devastated first by decades of infrastructure cuts, then by the impact of the shutdown. Buttigieg was the youngest of Biden’s rivals in the race for the nomination. He impressed with his competition, centrist positioning, as well as being the first candidate married to a man.

Rebuilding America’s infrastructure could be bipartisan common ground with at least some Republicans. McConnell’s recognition of Biden’s victory, and the group’s leader’s congratulatory phone call to the Senate, is the first contact in a long series: a good part of the government’s agenda will depend on the relationship between those two. Although Biden does not despair of a “coup” by winning two senatorial seats for Democrats in Georgia on Jan. 5, thus snatching the majority from him. Since yesterday the president-elect, despite a bad cold, has left for a tail campaign in Georgia.
