The doubts about the return to classes on January 7 of 75% of high school students, predicted by the last Dpcm, are increasingly consistent. These are raised by the same government representatives who fear the third wave of Covid-19 infections. The most drastic is the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, according to whom “loosening the measures would be a serious mistake: you have to close, not open at this time.”
Hope looks to Germany
The head of the health department also makes a reference to what is happening in Germany: Chancellor “Merkel did well to decide the total blockade” until next January 10.
The Vice Minister of Health Pierpaolo Sileri is also aligned with Speranza: “Christmas celebrated in the same Municipality, it will bring families closer together and that is why it is inevitable that contagions will resurface ”.
Silieri believes that “if it is a small climb it will be manageable, but a new peak in January will prevent us from doing what we have to do: reopen schools, reopen restaurants, let go of skiing, get our lives back ”.
It all depends on the numbers
For the return to school of more than two and a half million high school students, although alternating by the restriction of 75% attendance, everything will depend, at this point, on the evolution of infections and the rate of transmission of the virus.
The latest figures confirm a slight decrease for new cases, but still very high and worrying in terms of deaths: 846 in the last twenty-four hours.
Cases not visible on January 7?
One last consideration: on January 7, the possible increase in contagion cases due to the Christmas holidays may not yet be visible. A possibility that, added to the inadequate means of transportation in the large centers, led the president of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Massimiliano Fedriga, to ask to advance the return to school by at least one week.
