New postponement in Iran of the execution of Ahmad Reza Djalali, the Iranian-Swedish doctor with a past as an investigator in Italy, who was definitively sentenced to death for “espionage” in favor of Israel. The hanging, which was scheduled for today, was suspended in extremis, as it already happened two weeks ago, according to sources in the investigator’s family.
Djalali, 49, is being held in solitary confinement in Tehran’s Evin Prison and there is currently no information on a possible new date set for the execution. The stoppage follows strong protests from European countries over the hanging of dissident journalist Ruhollah Zam last Saturday, prompting the boycott of a major business forum between the EU and Iran scheduled for this week. International diplomatic pressure continues on Djalai, who has always pleaded not guilty and was convicted in a trial that Amnesty International defined as “sensationally unfair”. Without explicitly mentioning his case, the Tehran authorities have recently expressed their willingness to exchange prisoners.
