Avalanche in the Marmolada destroys the historic Pian dei Fiacconi refuge

avalanche in Marbled. Yesterday an avalanche broke loose on the Trentino side of the summit, destroying the Pian dei Fiacconi refuge and a ski resort on the Fedaia pass. Apparently there are no victims or injuries: the men of the mountain rescue, in fact, have already carried out a remediation, excluding that there are people involved.

The avalanche, local media reported, broke up. between Punta Rocca and Punta Penia and had a front of 600 meters. It overwhelmed the shelter at the foot of the Marmolada on the afternoon of Monday, December 14. The alarm was raised by a helicopter pilot who saw the shelter half buried.

The refuge, which has been closed in recent weeks and is located 2,626 meters above sea level upstream of the chairlift, was fully focused. The Alta Val di Fassa Alpine Rescue immediately dispatched a team to verify that there were no cars in the valley parking lot and thus avoid the possible presence of hikers. Having ascertained that there were no cars and that the police had no disappearance report, the team returned and left at dawn this morning to check the situation at the scene, confirming that no persons appear to be involved.

The manager: disastrous situation

“The situation is disastrous, half of the shelter has been destroyed and the other half must be demolished,” confirms the manager of the Pian dei Fiacconi shelter, Guido Trevisan, after the inspection of the structure this morning. The shelter was due to reopen shortly for the winter season. “I think the detachment probably didn’t happen yesterday but earlier, but at this point it doesn’t even matter too much,” adds Trevisan. At first it seemed that the Ghiacciaio refuge had also been affected by the avalanche but, as Trevisan himself explains, after an inspection the structure does not appear to have suffered significant damage at this time.

The previous one from 2014

It is not the first time that an avalanche has seriously damaged a high mountain refuge. In February 2014 it was the turn of the Petrarca all’Altissima refuge, an important destination for high altitude hikers between Val Passiria and Val Senales, in South Tyrol. Already in 1931 an avalanche had destroyed the structure. Reconstruction work began on the refuge last summer, which has a long history dating back to the late 19th century. The works, with an investment by the province of Bolzano of more than 3 million euros, will end in 2023.
