Party restrictions may not be announced until Thursday. And half the country still does not know if they will be able to see relatives

The hypothetical additional restrictions that the government should authorize for the next Christmas season are being turned into a soap opera. A few days before the umpteenth weekend with a red stamp due to the risk of social gatherings in the street, that of December 19 and 20, the executive has still not received any indication. Indeed, according to what is clear, the day of the decision should not be today and the communication of the new regulations could be postponed until Thursday. Following a government that has become accustomed to last minute decisions (and sometimes quite schizophrenic).

For the moment, the most reputable hypothesis foresees that all of Italy can turn into a red (or orange) zone during the holidays and before the holidays throughout the Christmas period. This decision, as leaked Sunday night as a result of the controversy caused by the photos of social gatherings in the main Italian cities, should have been made official the following day, Monday. Then, given the divisions in the executive between “permissive” and “sanctioning”, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte decided to ask the CTS for a list of appropriate measures to counteract the level of coronavirus contagion currently taking over the country. Today the CTS met and in the afternoon it should deliver its report to the executive. Which then must incorporate the decisions of the scientists who, however, to become officials must also go through the confrontation between the government and the Regions. In practice, Italians will not know their destination until a moment before the holidays.

«Inescapable blockade for Italy after the decisions taken by Berlin and London? My opinion is clear ”, said the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza,“ these measures can be useful and can help us, especially in the weeks of the Christmas holidays, to avoid a third wave and a new upswing ”. “We are thinking about the two weeks of the Christmas holidays – he continued – which is the most complicated period. The pace of travel and relationships that people activate goes up a lot and therefore is the time when you have to be more careful. “We must understand if it is appropriate and less restrictive. I think so. But the decision is not mine alone ”, said the Minister of Regional Affairs, Francesco Boccia. Adding that the decision will be based on objective data and waiting for “a collective yes without further discussion between the criminalists and the openings.”

A call for unity, that of Boccia, which seems destined to fall on deaf ears. The fact that in the majority there are different sensitivities also emerged plastically during the meeting of the group leaders in the Senate on the exceptions that will be granted to small towns with respect to the prohibition to leave the Municipality on the main holidays. Specifically, the leader of the Pd group, Andrea Marcucci, and the minister Federico D’Incà would have faced each other. The Democratic president would have pressed to review the brake on mobility, while D’Incà defended the prudent line of the executive. The fact is that, at the end of the meeting, while the 5 Star Movement has expressed its willingness to continue working for a common line, the Democratic Party on the contrary presented a party motion to request that the inhabitants be allowed on the 25th December 26. Municipalities with less than ten thousand inhabitants to meet for a few hours with their loved ones. Motion that will be voted tomorrow at Palazzo Madama but that, in the absence of a majority agreement, is destined to be rejected.

The issue of restrictions inevitably involves financial support for activities that may be damaged by closures. This was reiterated by the Minister of Agriculture Teresa Bellanova who invoked “refreshments” to cover 100% of the losses. From this point of view, the rapporteur for the provision in the Senate, Vincenzo Presutto of the M5, has already announced the imminent arrival of a Ristori cinque decree. In any case, it will not be discussed before January.
