The thing is, it was bad at first, then it seemed to come out, and now it’s fighting the virus again. “I started to feel bad in mid-October – says the young woman who wants to remain anonymous – but the first quick swab on October 13 was negative. As I was still feeling bad, I did a second molecular smear at the Fiumicino drive-in on October 20 and it was positive.

The first time the symptoms went from a very strong pain in the muscles, with a low-grade fever, to quite heavy breathing difficulties, although the patient continued to be followed at home by the ASL Rome 1 GP, who treated her with antibiotics. cortisone, anti-inflammatories, lactoferrin, and other supplements. On October 30, the girl underwent a new molecular smear at Sant’Andrea hospital, which tested negative. On November 13, the second tampon, always negative, arrived at the drive-in theater in Santa Maria della Pietà. After a few days the girl returned to work, to school.

Very well, in short, until the young woman’s father fell ill with Covid-19 a few days ago, apparently due to an outbreak in the workplace. “As a precaution – says the young woman who explains that she is not immunosuppressed – we all had the swab in the family: I tested positive for the molecular, I had a fever at 38 and a half and now I have muscle pain again.

The story of the girl who became positive again after recovery could be part of the case study being studied by Professor Francesco Landi, who conducted a study on those recovered from Covid with a group of researchers from the Gemelli Polyclinic and the Catholic University , now published in ‘American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Of a sample of 131 patients, 22, equivalent to 16.7%, were still positive for a third swab administered two weeks after the last negative. Landi explains: “These patients are officially cured because they met the criteria outlined by the WHO: for three consecutive days without fever and negative for the double swab. However, after two weeks they were found to be positive. Does that mean they are still sick? No. It means that there is a residue of the virus left in your body, which is not enough to make you sick again, but can be transmitted to others and in this case replicate and therefore make others sick. In other words, these people can be contagious, so it is best to be cautious, wear a mask, keep your distance and adopt virtuous behaviors.
