The first words released: “My sentence? An injustice” – “In the meantime, I want to see my family. Then I will tell them everything I have been through. My sentence was an injustice and whoever makes a mistake will pay fairly.” These are the words of Antonino Speziale after he was released from Messina prison and greeted a group of fans of the local soccer team, who came to greet him as he left the penitentiary. After a hug with his father Roberto, who went looking for him, Speziale left on his way home in Catania.
His lawyer Giuseppe Lipera, who considers him innocent, had requested to anticipate the release of his client by granting him house arrest for health reasons. But the requests were rejected. The lawyer also requested a review of the trial, taking up the “friendly fire” thesis, which attributes the death of the inspector to the impact with a police Land Rover during the clashes with the ultras in Catania. Hypothesis that was examined by various investigating magistrates, review courts and at the three sentencing levels of the Speziale trial, which was tried as a minor because at the time of the events he was not yet of legal age.
In semi-liberation the other condemned, Daniele Micale – Instead, he returned to semi-freedom just before Christmas 2018, Daniele Natale Micale, 32 years old, the other ultra from Catania sentenced to 11 years for the death of Inspector Raciti after having served more than half of his sentence in Catania prison, and has a residual sentence of less than 2 years.
The history – According to the prosecution’s reconstruction, on February 2, 2007, several Catania fans tried to “break” the security cordon that tried to prevent contact with Palermo supporters. In this context, Speziale and Mycale allegedly threw a tin sink at the police, hitting Raciti, causing a fatal liver injury. The police inspector died after being admitted to the Garibaldi hospital in Catania.
Messina ‘rival’ fans flag – Even the historical rivals of the Messina fans, protagonists of fierce clashes with the Catania supporters, have “hailed” the release of Speziale from prison in the Gazzi district. They did so with a hug and a banner placed in front of the prison with the inscription: “Unprecedented special abuse, now free and always innocent.”
The world of football ultras has always been tense around Speziale, overcoming even old rivalries. And not only in Italy. The “Free Speziale” banner was displayed during the second half of a match between Bayern Munich and Stuttgart, but also in the stands occupied by Borussia Dortmund fans, in the match against Hertha Berlin. The initiative of displaying banners praising Speziale was also taken in the past by the Porto corner and by the fans of Cluj and Brasov, two teams that dispute the Romanian championship.
