In these minutes a violent eruption is taking place on Etna. The volcano began to erupt from the summit area. Loud roars and lava fountains can be heard and observed from all over the Etna area and from nearby Calabria. The cloud of smoke is heading towards Catania.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etneo Observatory, reports that as of approximately 22.50 UTC the surveillance cameras show a significant decrease in explosive activity in the Sureste crater. Furthermore, with respect to the effusive activity reported in the previous press release (Etna press release – update n ° 91), this is produced by two open eruptive fissures on the south flank of the southeastern crater. The fissures feed two lava flows that extend in a southwesterly and southward direction, whose fronts currently remain confined at an altitude of about 2,850 m above sea level.
The values ​​of the amplitude of the volcanic tremor remain at high levels, even if a decrease in the values ​​is observed from approximately 22:10 UTC. The position of the centroid of the volcanic tremor sources has remained substantially unchanged since the last update.
There is also a decrease in infrasonic activity and, in particular, in the amplitude of infrasonic tremor, while the number and amplitude of infrasonic events remain at a high level.
In concomitance with the maximum activity, the deformations of the soil measured, in the CDV and CBD stations, a variation of inclination of the order of 0.1 microrad. At the moment, the deformation monitoring networks do not report significant changes.

At the same time, a sharp increase in the amplitude of the volcanic tremor is observed, which in the space of half an hour has gone from medium to high levels and currently, the amplitude continues to grow. The centroid of the source of the volcanic tremor is in the SE crater area.
At the same time, an increase in infrasonic activity was observed in both the number and the amplitude of infrasonic events. As of 21:10 (UTC) the presence of infrasonic tremor is observed.
