Corrado Augias returns the Legion of Honor in protest of the Regeni case after French President Emmanuel Macron awarded the same award to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi. He writes it in La Repubblica:
“Dear Director, tomorrow, Monday, December 14, I will go to the French Embassy to return the insignia of the Legion of Honor that was given to me at that time. A gesture in the same serious and purely symbolic, could say sentimental. I feel that I have to do it because of the deep cultural and emotional bond that binds me to France, the land of my family ”.
Then explain:
“My opinion is that President Macron should not have awarded the Legion of Honor to a head of state who objectively made himself complicit in heinous criminals. I say this for the memory of the unfortunate Giulio Regeni, but also for France, for the importance that recognition still represents more than two centuries after its foundation. There are times when even heads of state should stick to what Americans call the right thing to do. I think President Emmanuel Macron did something unfair in this case. “
