For him Vaccine for COVID-19 Sanofi will have to wait longer than expected. The 20 million doses that should have reached Italy in June are postponed. The French company had promised to deliver a total of 40 million doses to Italy by 2021. But a delay of 3 to 6 months causes delivery to be postponed worldwide. And also in Italy it will be discussed at the end of next year. Which means that the completion of the sled of the Italian vaccination plan inevitably. Also because Italy, like the entire EU, was focusing a lot on the Sanofi vaccine, so much so that more doses were expected than many other candidate vaccines, only on par with AstraZeneca.

Sanofi and AstraZeneca Vaccine Delays

Sanofi announced that a “low immune response in adults older than 49 years“. The Sanofi vaccine requires two doses, with conservation between 2 and 8 degrees. Now a new phase 2b trial will be needed starting in February: it will affect volunteers aged 50 years and over, with phase 3 (the last) that could start only in June. The arrival of the vaccine, therefore, is scheduled for the last quarter of 2021. Sanofi has announced a production capacity of one billion doses per year. Nothing changes for Italy: doses remain at 40 million , but the timetable is changing. This will be largely discussed in 2022. Furthermore, the vaccine is also slowing down AstraZenecaAuthorization has not yet been requested from the EMA because a greater effectiveness has been recorded with a different dosage than expected. Therefore, a slowdown seems inevitable and, instead of reaching the end of January, the doses could slide a few weeks or months.

Anti-Covid vaccines for Italy

Italy has opted for some 200 million total doses of future vaccines, on the basis of contracts signed by the European Commission. Most of it is from Johnson & Johnson, with 53.84 million doses. Followed by AstraZeneca and Sanofi with 40 million each. There are 30 million doses that should come from CureVac. Smaller amounts of the two vaccines that seem closest: 27 million from Pfizer and 10 from Moderna. However, the unknown refers to the moment of authorization of the vaccines. If all goes well, Health Minister Roberto Speranza said a few days ago, delivery could be complete by the fourth quarter of 2021. But the case of Sanofi shows that this forecast can hardly be respected, considering unavoidable delays. Meanwhile, for the first quarter, barring unforeseen circumstances, 8.7 million doses from Pfizer and 1.3 from Moderna are expected.
