The doctor who yelled at a Covid patient “You will die in 10 minutes” defends himself: his explanation
Angelo Cefalo, a doctor from 118 Taranto, explained why he screamed “Die in ten minutes!” a Francesco Cortese, Covid patient who passed away on the morning of November 3 at the Moscati hospital. The story, which has provoked numerous controversies, was told by Cortese’s daughter, Angela, lawyer for Martina Franca. Now Angelo Cefalo defends himself.
The occasion is a press conference organized in the auditorium of the Vinci pavilion of the Santissima Annunziata hospital, which was also attended by the director of 118 Mario balzanelli and the general manager Asl Stefano rossi.
Angelo Cefalo, as reported by ‘La Repubblica’, said: “I screamed just to save him, like a father yelling at his son, why did not want to put on the CPAP mask which at that time was fundamental ”.
The doctor recalled those emotional moments: “I gave the patient the blood gas and it was very low oximetry. He was a patient with heart disease and kidney failure, with a fistula in his arm, he had chronic bronchitis and diabetes. If I had been intubated I would not have succeeded for that reason, to convince him to put CPAP, I used transparent language, as we doctors are used to doing when we interact with patients and their families ”.
Then Céfalo spoke about the patient’s phone that rang at that time and the dialogue he had with his daughter.
His words: “‘In 10 minutes you will die’ I was just telling her to make her put on the mask. I asked him if he wanted to see his grandchildren again. “
Again Céfalo: “Obviously, the 10 minutes weren’t real, but they were there. my emerging despair, because our work is based on the seconds that were fundamental to save the patient’s life, which unfortunately didn’t make it after about 2 hours. What is a defeat for the family is mainly ours ”.
The doctor also said: “I kept the messages on WhatsApp with the daughter as in a safe, because I gave her my availability to explain what happened and give her comfort for the loss of her father.
