From head of nursing to Covid patient, the testimony of the nurse from Civitanova: ‘I advise deniers to take a tour in intensive care’

When the health personnel of the Covid Hospital of Civitanova Marche (Mc) saw another patient arrive aboard an ambulance, no one imagined that the person who was lying on the stretcher was a member of the family. Giordano Garbuglia, 57 years old, head of nursing, for years, in fact, has been playing the role of health coordinator of the department of Anesthesia and resuscitation of the civil hospital of Civitanova, the same one in which until last October, before the reactivation of the Spaceship, the Covid Fiera delle Marche wanted by the former governor Luca ceriscioli and created, among the controversies, by Guido Bertolaso, he worked many doctors, nurses and oss then he moved to the Covid hospital. Therefore, it is impossible to consider Garbuglia a patient like everyone else. For the doctor Daniela corsi, head of the department of anesthesia and resuscitation in Civitanova and now coordinator of the intensive care modules of Covid HospitalIt was a real headache, since the head nurse is part of the anesthesia and resuscitation staff. After risking dying from his positivity with Sars-Cov2, now the doctor is better and, fresh out of intensive care, tells us his experience through a moving video call.

Giordano Garbuglia, how did it go?
Towards the second week of November, when I was already working here at the Covid Hospital, I began to has some symptoms which, however, I have not given too much weight. First a common cold, then came a few fever lines. The days passed and the symptoms worsened, so on the 12th of the month I decided to undergo the nasopharyngeal molecular smear which soon gave a positive result.

And what happened then?
Before long, symptoms worsened, and tests showed severe bilateral pneumonia. I had followed many patients in the same conditions until that day, especially in the first phase of the pandemic, even harder than the current one, but now it was my turn. In summary, on November 17 I entered the Covid Hospital and after two days in semi-intensive they were forced to intubate.

So are you fully aware of what has happened to you?
Total, until they intubated me. I saw concern around me. In particular, Dr. Corsi herself, my direct superior, with whom she had been close in the spring when Covid struck her.

Coming back, how do you think you got infected?
Trust me, I have no idea. It could have happened outside, in everyday life, but I do not exclude that I caught Covid inside the hospital.

Has your perception of the virulence of Covid changed?
Clearly things are different, but this virus is still one real beast. I ran the risk of dying, now I am better but I will still have to fight hard to eradicate the consequences of the disease. Before falling ill, however, I experienced first-hand the tragedy of many who suffered, of those who did not survive, the pain of families. Absolute evil, a virus that gets inside it kills the lungs.

However, outside, there are still those who think that Covid-19 does not exist, that it is a simple invention of someone, to favor pharmaceutical companies for example. What do you think of those who expose certain theories?
Look, I run the risk of becoming vulgar, aggressive and mean. Let me vent for a moment.

Is it better?
Yes, now I can answer and to do so I will try to be as calm as possible, understanding that deniers are still the greatest danger from a social point of view. To them I say be well informed through reliable sources and above all to study. Or they can walk in here or walk into any Covid ICU to see for themselves what is really going on. In many subjects the virus does not manifest itself or it does so with mild symptoms, in others it reaches the root of life and can even kill. Read the statistics on victims with and for Covid.

The current national debate revolves around the holidays and the Christmas season and how to get there. His point of view?
“Christmas has never been celebrated at home with the family before. My appeal goes to all the impatient: it is absolutely necessary to lower the contagion threshold to limit hospitalizations and deaths, in addition to the white weeks and New Year’s dinners ”.

After approaching death, you are now out of intensive care and doing better – next steps?
“I am in the hands of my colleagues and I hope for a gradual and constant improvement. Dr. Corsi says she wants to get rid of me (smiles, ed.) and will soon release me. Leaving here will not be all roses, a long period of rehabilitation awaits me given the deep marks that Covid left on my body ”.

What has given you strength in these dramatic weeks?
“The closeness of my family, even though I can only feel with them over the phone. But knowing that they are there is already helpful. And then to my colleagues to whom I will never stop thanking what they have done for me. I repeat, being on the other side of the fence was a very special feeling, I will never forget it ”.
