(ANSA) – BOLOGNA, 03 DEC – The ‘umarells’ made famous by the Bolognese writer Danilo Masotti enter the Zingarelli vocabulary, which in the 2021 edition ‘consecrates’ the word now outside the dialect (and cultural) limits of origin.
“Retiree who wanders, mostly with his hands behind his back, in the workplace, checking, asking questions, giving suggestions or criticizing the activities that take place there”, is the dictionary definition for the Bolognese expression ‘omarello, little man’ , indicated as born in 2007, the year in which the first edition of Masotti’s book ‘Umarells’ for Pendragon was published.
“I would never have imagined that since the chance encounter with an elderly man walking his dog in the frozen parking lot of a well-known cinema in Rastignano (Bologna) at first light on the morning of February 4, 2005 (currently in the one I conceived this quarter with the meaning with which we understand it now), the word umarell and its plural umarells would have ended up in the dictionary of the Italian language ”, says Masotti.” Yes – he adds – I was happy when Pendragon Editions published the book of the same name in 2007, which in 2017 won the Pino Zac award as part of the National Satire Festival in Forte dei Marmi; overwhelmed when my city in April 2018 wanted to dedicate a square to umarells; in ecstasy in 2020 thanks to an episode published in Mickey Mouse dedicated to umarells, but I must say that now, with the word inserted in the vocabulary of Zingarelli, we are really at the top.
