The European Union invites Member States to extend the Holidays from Christmas to avoid a massive return to class that could make the head rebound virus. The recommendation is addressed to twenty-seven countries where only one, ours, has the schools closed for weeks and a long period of Christmas holidays. That is why the government and the Minister of Education Lucia azzolina they give little weight to the recommendation and instead aim to reopen in January, if not before the Christmas holidays, in mid-December.
Given that now even in the yellow areas there is distance education in secondary schools, the intent is to get everyone back to the classroom, in percentage, despite some resistance from the government. The ministers of Pd and Leu, Franceschini and Speranza, remain opposed while the 5S and Italia Viva have long been deployed on the reopening front.
Christmas school holidays 2020: here are the dates region by region
School, revolution in the report card: in elementary school no more votes but only trials, the Ministry’s plan
The dice
Conte and Azzolina are pushing for a gradual return to the classroom, starting Monday, December 14, and have the support of the Scientific Technical Committee, which for some time has not only reduced the risks that are run at school, but also has focused on pointing out the negative consequences that a prolonged closure has on students also from the health and psychological point of view. Just today Agostino Miozzo, coordinator of the CTS, will be audited by the Chamber’s Culture Commission on the issue of resuming teaching activities. And also tomorrow the Minister of Health Roberto Speranza will inform the Chambers about the possible contents of the new Dpcm.
Despite opposition from the majority of regional presidents, who will always meet with the government today in the context of the State-Regions Conference, the prime minister is pushing to reopen secondary and secondary schools, especially in regions that are not in the red zone. This is the case of Piedmont that two days ago moved to the orange zone – like Lombardy – but unlike the latter, it has not reopened middle schools. Between the open Christmas and the open schools, Piedmontese President Cirio seems to have chosen the first one but yesterday he received a letter from Azzolina asking him to give an account of the choice.
Inserting a reopening percentage in the new Dpcm also for secondary schools may not be enough, given the possibility that regional presidents will have to close. If the attempt to complete ten days of classes, perhaps with half of the students, fails, the main objective remains unchanged: to resume on January 7 without interruptions. An objective that would align Italy with the rest of Europe in which work is being done especially on the transport front that represents, especially in large cities, the true Achilles heel that favors the spread of the virus.
The inflection point
When meeting yesterday with the leaders of the group, it was Conte himself who proposed the establishment of tables in the prefectures to discuss with the directors, administrators and managers of local transport, the differentiated solutions from zone to zone in time of entry and attendance to the school. In this way, even in the yellow zones, such as Lazio or Liguria, even high school students could return to class, albeit in a small percentage.
New dpcm Christmas, armored regional borders from the 21st. Cities closed at Christmas and New Year
Christmas in the time of Covid will be armored. From “a reinforced yellow”, to quote Giuseppe Conte. After a long battle that took place overnight at Palazzo Chigi, the line of “maximum prudence” was imposed on the government. Indeed: of the “maximum rigor”.
