The old Communist comrade say thanks Zaia. “I was saved by the COVID-19, thanks to Venetian health». Renato Darsiè, a Venetian from the mainland, historical trade unionist from Porto Marghera, an energetically 79-year-old former Venice councilor, has just emerged from a two-week nightmare, locked in the Covid ward of the Dolo hospital. “It was a very hard experience, but I was never afraid of dying. I knew I could do it and I knew I was in good hands.”
COVID-19
The nightmare began on October 26, when one declared severe fever. “I had chills and great tiredness, I called my GP, who immediately sent me to the Noale hospital to have a swab done. Confirmation Thursday: I was positive. Insulation at home. The fever did not pass. The scrupulous doctor, Laura Perocco, monitored me regularly and on Sunday morning she sent me to Dolo hospital to make a screen for me. In the afternoon they came to look for me by ambulance. It was the most traumatic moment. Leaving home, his wife, being tied up on a cot and sirens sounding. You are afraid of becoming a number. Disappear from the world’s radar. Losing contact with loved ones.
The priest
Instead, Darsiè discovered the true face of Venetian health, made of humanity and professionalism. The first to notice was his wife Rosanna Zanon. “When they took him away, he was really terrified. He had read and seen on television many stories of sick people who had been isolated from their families, of people who had died without their loved ones being able to see and know anything. Instead, I had a constant dialogue with the hospital. That same night they phoned me to inform me of Renato’s condition and the next day they gave me the number of the doctor who was following him, indicating the time of the call. Talking with the doctor was very important, I calmed down.
The two weeks in the hospital were very hard, although Darsiè was never intubated, it was enough to give him oxygen on a ventilator. «The first 24 hours were amazing, they had me at reception, I would say parked waiting for a place. There was so much confusion. I found there was disorganization. Then I also understood the conditions in which health personnel must work, under incredible stress. When I was transferred to the Covid room, life changed. I discovered an efficient world, trained personnel, great humanity.
The world of Darsiè was in a room. I couldn’t get out of there, it was closed from the outside. “There were two beds – he says – The first roommate died two days later, then they put a 91-year-old Moroccan. He was blind and didn’t know a word of Italian. However, throughout the days we have found a common language: music. I sang lullabies, maybe religious songs, I folk songs. I also tried L’Internazionale ».
The healing
Comrade Darsiè smiles, this battle is also won. “The first days were very difficult, I was hallucinating, it seemed to me that monsters were entering the room and they wanted to take me. He was very weak, in pain. The death of my roommate has bothered me. Fortunately, the staff was very attentive. Wonderful people, even if it has been severely tested. The unionist spirit resurfaces: “They have exhausting shifts. But I understand that it is an emergency. When you’re at war, the rules jump. “
He decided to tell his story, to give courage to those beaten. Finishing up in a Covid ward does not mean going to death: «I saw so much fear around me – he explains – from my room I heard people complain, others cry, asking how much was left to live. Sometimes I have seen anguish on the faces of nurses and doctors. But I also saw his tenacity. And the humanity they treated you with. At one point the nurses came by with a tablet so they could communicate with the family. That was the most effective medicine.
Back at his home in the Mirano countryside, Darsiè is already planning a toast (outdoors and from a distance) with friends. After a lifetime on the barricades, defending workers’ rights, at nearly 80 he found himself fighting a more subtle enemy again. However, there are still those who deny the existence of Covid. By the way, if he had a denier before him, what would he say? The answer is in keeping with the frankness of the character: “Che xe un coon.”
