In the fight against coronavirus, attention is paid to the research developments of a vaccine. When available, governments will try to vaccinate a large part of the population in a short time, to achieve herd immunity as soon as possible. In Italy, vaccinating between 60 and 70% of the population means having the necessary doses for some 40 million people. On December 2, the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, will be in Parliament to report on the vaccine plan that the government is studying. “It will be an unprecedented campaign“he had said in recent days.
Vaccination of the Italian population will be gradual, staggered over the months and will use vaccines from various pharmaceutical companies. Taking into account the agreements made with the different companies, 13.6% of all vaccines purchased by the European Union should reach Italy. Rome’s goal is to vaccinate up to 300,000 people a day. However, this is unlikely to happen from January. Logistics management was entrusted to the extraordinary commissioner, Domenico Arcuri: but also managing to immediately launch a gigantic organizational machine, at the beginning of 2021 simply there won’t be many doses available how many would be needed for a mass vaccination.
Which vaccine will come first?
It is not yet known which vaccine will arrive first, between Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca-IrbmOxofrd me Modern. But there are differences in distribution: Pfizer vaccine, for example, must be stored at a temperature below -70 degrees to resist. In order to be able to administer it to the population, the territories must, therefore, be equipped with special cold stores. And in fact they are doing it: Lazio acquires 80, Lombardy has launched a tender for 90 and in total at least 300 must be bought in Italy. Of this vaccine, however, only 1.7 million doses will arrive in January. By all of 2021 there will be about 27 million – not enough to achieve herd immunity next year.
Where can you get vaccinated
But, as mentioned, it will not be the only vaccine available. Neither the AstraZeneca nor the Moderna need such low temperatures to be stored. As for AstraZeneca, 70 million doses should arrive in Italy in the first six months of next year. And there will be no limits to special cold rooms that, for example, will allow vaccination only in hospitals and large centers equipped with the necessary equipment. Therefore, the AstraZeneca vaccine can also be given general practitioner, as is the current case of the flu. And, with a cost of around 3 euros per dose, it will also be much cheaper than the others.
Who will the first doses go to
Returning to the Pfizer vaccine, distribution has already started in the United States for a few days. From December it should also arrive in the UK. Both countries will be vaccinated first Health workers. Even in Italy, from next year it will be like this: in the plan that Speranza will present in Parliament, the first vaccines are expected to reach health workers, and then move on to over 65 and categories at risk.
