Schools closed, letter from a mother to Cirio: “Dear governor, now tell me what to say to my son”

Dear Governor, we are finally in the orange zone! Congratulations, with everyone’s effort and the administration we made it. When we entered the red zone, a blanket of anguish enveloped me. I have a seventh grade son and seeing him face the adventure of distance education again has left me in a state of grief and frustration.

Seeing the protest of the girls in Turin, I invited him to do the same (I can’t put out the flame of the rebellion, he’s stronger than me) but after a few days when I pressed the question “have you organized, have you organized? ”, he pointed out to me that the true rebellion or rather, the true revolution, was that sacrifice, saying yes to a circumstance that did not seek to contribute to the good of all.

In recent days he seemed to be right. in fact, for some time the newspapers told us that the Rt index had dropped, that we were doing well. We read that the Region even asks the Government to reopen the slopes, otherwise the economy of the mountain dies, and that a plan has already been made to ski safely. They tell us that we can go to the shopping centers, staggered and with masks, because the Region already has a plan to be able to reopen, otherwise the economy dies. And so we started counting the days to go back to school. And now we are in the orange zone.

So, kind governor, I do not rebel against your decision not to reopen the school because my son taught me that in obedience there is a mysterious and powerful form of revolution. But in conscious obedience, not of the sheep. Governor, I’m asking for your help.
What can I say to my son, used to staying 6 hours with the mask in silence only to see teachers and classmates in the face, to justify that the schools will not open again?
What should I say to my son who, hearing his statement on the news, threw a punch at the wall and almost twisted his wrist?
What should I say to my child who has red eyes at night because he knows, mistakenly, even in the hours of rest, that he is connected to the screen just to talk with friends?
What should I tell my son who has always been walking to school and does not want to take the media, because they are “Greta’s generation” and care about the environment?
What should I say to my child who begins to think that life exists only behind a screen?
What should I say to my son, who feels a plan has been made to reopen the shopping centers, but is starting work on a transportation plan today?

I ask you, Governor, because only the wrong answers come to mind. It occurs to me that politics only looks at the economy and not at education. Or perhaps, who knows, that the Councilor for Transport is less diligent than the Councilor for Commerce. Or maybe because children don’t vote, they have less weight. Or perhaps that politics no longer knows how to work in the future but only plugs emergencies. That it is perhaps even more comfortable that the economy is spinning faster in a world where heads are not so heavy.

However, dear Governor, I do not have all the elements at stake. And mind you, I am not against cash back, openings (even the sector in which I work is suffering a lot from the crisis). But, dear Governor, I do not understand that this option is open to everyone and to the school. You know, our children don’t learn with words, but because they see what we do. And these actions of ours are communicating negative things, that the value of a people is exclusively monetary.

Dear Governor, I beg you to tell us parents what to say to our children. Why say patience, after nobody around respects the rules and nobody checks, after the safest and most controlled place that we think is the school, it turns out a bit. So, Governor, if you really think that going to school for a few days is absurd (but don’t open the shopping centers, where children who don’t go to school will go), explain it to our children, who would give their hearts to say goodbye to even a day. before the holidays.

Because, dear Governor, we have always shown our children documentaries in which, in Africa, children travel the miles to go to school, but I assure you that many of our children, right now, would do the same. With mask. So Governor, I ask you to tell me what we have to say, but a clear speech and that our children also understand, because there is something at stake that is not going to be solved with a vaccine. Thank you very much for helping.
