Emanuela Orlandi, Vatican: “The procedure for the alleged burial in the Teutonic cemetery has been closed”

The press release recalls that “in that context of preliminary investigation, an additional assessment ordered by the magistrates had led to the discovery, in an underground room within the cemetery complex, of thousands of bone fragments of different ages and origins. Controls on these findings, made by the teacher Giovanni Arcudi, an expert from the office, in the presence of consultants from the Orlandi family, concluded that the fragments found can be traced back before poor Emanuela disappeared. The most recent date dates back at least a hundred years ago. Hence, the note continues, the request for dismissal that closes one of the chapters of the sad story, in which the Vatican authorities have offered, from the beginning, the widest collaboration. In this spirit, the presentation order leaves the Orlandi family to proceed, in private, to any other research in some fragments already found and stored, in sealed containers, in the Gendarmerie“

It all started in July 2019 with the request of the Orlandi family, immediately accepted by the Vatican, to open two graves inside the Teutonic cemetery where the girl’s remains were supposed to have been hidden. But when they opened the graves they found completely empty. Not only were there not the remains of Emanuela, but also those of the two Princess which, according to the headstones, had been buried there. The Vatican then decided to also open the ossuaries found not far from the two tombs containing thousands of finds. But for the expert appointed by the Holy See, those “bones do not go back to a period after the late 1800s.”

The Vatican also specified that the consultant on behalf of the Orlandi family “requested laboratory tests on some seventy bone findings. Professor Arcudi and his team did not support the request because the same bone structures have very old dating characteristics. For these reasons, the samples were collected and kept under the command of the Gendarmerie at the disposal of the promoter of justice. ” Now, however, the Vatican authorities have given Emanuela’s family the opportunity to proceed privately with any further investigation into these fragments. The sign that the Orlandi case is not yet over.
