In the fight against the Coronavirus, our country would have already reached a turning point: at least this is the opinion of the doctor Ilaria Capua, a department chair at the University of Florida Institute for Emerging Pathogens. Talking to “Focus live”, an event for scientific dissemination organized by Focus at the Leonardo da Vinci Science and Technology Museum in Milan, the expert spoke again about the health emergency and said she felt confident, but specified that all countries in the world must prepare so that they will not find themselves again vulnerable in the near future. As for Italy, the situation is about to change. According to Capua, the signals are: “I think Italy is one step away from turning point. Things are better and the situation is more controlled ”. However, this should not cause citizens to lower their guard. “The pandemic is giving us strong and clear messages, telling us that many things are wrong“, explains the doctor, as reported”Dnakronos“. “For example, it tells us that we cannot bear another similar one.”
Getting organized is now essential to build a stronger system. “At this moment we have to redesign the systems in which we live and operate, also our relationship with nature and with other animal species”says Capua. “If we are going to invade certain areas and at the same time create high-risk situations, this can happen again. We must make sure that if this happens again we do not take another one like this one, but we know how to move and we have more resilient cities, more flexible and emergency-sensitive health structures, a level of digitization that allows us to work better, remotely and pollute less . This helps people open their eyes ”.
The human being, adds the doctor, has created systems that are not compatible with our fragility. These systems, insists the expert, should be more adapted to the reality in which we live. the vaccine? It alone will not be enough to end this battle. “Vaccines are tools used to manage and progressively reduce the impact of this emergency”, specifies Capua. “They may make it to the end of winter. But the vaccine is not magic. It could take a month to achieve immunity.” Still: “The vaccine is one piece of the puzzle. We must come to terms with reality, get through winter, and be ready for a spring of rebirth.”
In addition, the human population was faced with a virus for which it was not prepared.“It is a black swan, it has unique characteristics, absolutely exceptional”says Capua.“I hope that in 5 or 10 years this coronavirus will become the new cold virus.”
During her intervention, the doctor also addressed the issue Christmas, specifying that this time it will be necessary to spend the holidays in a more contained way: “How will I do Christmas? There will be three of us at most. This will be the Christmas of the close family, which perhaps makes us understand the true value of the extended family. Please respect this virus because we cannot allow ourselves to pretend it does not exist or that it is not capable of causing even worse harm than it did. “
