Near-absolute precision molds those found in the excavation of Civita Giuliana, not far from Pompeii. Two people among the many victims of the Vesuvius eruption in AD 79, almost two thousand years ago, who resurface from the past, and who can perhaps say more about the type of eruptions of the active volcano that is located near Naples. Also for this reason the discoveries of archaeologists are intertwined with the studies of geologists and volcanologists, who have always observed Vesuvius and its activity.
As the video published by the Pompeii Archaeological Park shows, the technique used for the molds is the one already devised in the 19th century by Giuseppe Fiorelli. Technique that provides a splash of liquid plaster in the cavities left by the bodies, thus allowing, with subsequent cooling, to obtain practically perfect and meticulous molds. The archaeologists’ work, also coordinated by the Procura di Torre Annunziata after a “trafficking” of grave robbers was discovered in 2017, continued in November, despite the closure of the Pompeii Archaeological Park due to the coronavirus. Investigations and excavations continued until the exceptional discovery was made public at this time.
Maybe it’s a Roman magistrate and a slave
The two casts, probably a young slave and his master, found themselves in more unique than rare condition. The two died in all probability almost on the spot 9 a.m., October 25, AD 79, on the second day of the eruption of Vesuvius, when the pyroclastic current poured towards the coast, crushing everything along its route: among these, was the nearby Herculaneum, at that time a kind of residential suburb of the rich Neapolitan patricians, and Pompeii itself, which had “lost” the agricultural sound a few years ago, which became “independent” under the name of Nuceria (the phenomenon, historically, is known as “deduction” and also provoked violent clashes between Pompeians and Nocerini on the occasion of the Amphithearo sports competitions, so that Nero decreed the closure of the Pompeii plant for two years).
Civita Giuliana, the extramural suburb of Pompeii
Today’s discovery took place in Civita Giuliana, suburb of Pompeii it was just outside its walls. In all probability, it was a huge Roman villa, inhabited by some important Roman politician: perhaps the same one whose mold was found today, as would also be shown by some remains of a mantle found next to it. But even the remains of horses in the stable, including a highly prestigious sauro harnessed with particularly lavish finishes, the villa’s frescoes, and anything else that escaped destruction, would reveal that the owner was someone important: a senator, or perhaps a high magistrate. . Beside him, a younger boy, probably a slave running away with him: the chestnut himself seemed “ready” for an imminent departure. His models, unlike those found and belonging to the “first wave” of the eruption, present surprising details: among them, even the model of the veins of the hands.
