Gaudio’s curriculum is rich and he specializes in the health sector. Graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Sapienza University in 1980 and specialized in Internal Medicine in 1985, researcher in Human Anatomy at the University from 1983 to 1986, then professor at the University of L’Aquila from 1987, where from 1997 to 2000 he was dean faculty. of Medicine and Surgery. Since 2000 he has been a professor of Human Anatomy at Sapienza, since 2001 he coordinates the Doctorate in Experimental and Clinical Hepatology (since 2013 in experimental and clinical Hepato-gastroenterology) and since 2011 the undergraduate degree at the International School of Medicine. From 2008 to 2010 he was director of the Department of Human Anatomy. Since 2010 he has held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine and President of the Permanent Conference of the Faculties and Schools of Medicine and Surgery of Italy. He is also – as stated on the La Sapienza website – a graduate of the Conservatory of L’Aquila (1979) in main piano. In La Sapienza from 2006 to 2010 he was president of the Sapienza Music Commission that coordinates the project of the orchestras and choirs of the University.
Gaudio is the author of more than 500 scientific publications, most of them published in the most important international journals of the sector, on topics of clinical and experimental hepatology and Microcirculation of organs. In these studies, carried out over the last 30 years, the main structural, ultrastructural, microcirculatory and histophysiological aspects of the liver and bile ducts have been addressed in normal and experimental conditions and in human pathology.

In recent years, in particular, Eugenio Gaudio has focused his research activity on the study of: the mechanisms that regulate the proliferation and death of cholangiocytes in the bile duct; localization and activation of stem / progenitor cells resident in the liver. In this field of research, he collaborates with the research units coordinated by Professor G.Alpini (Texas A&M University, USA) and Professor L. Reid (NUNC Univ. Chapel Hill, USA).
Since 2012 he is president of the Siai (Italian Society of Anatomy and Histology), since 2014 of the Fisbi (Italian Federation of Biological Societies).
Gaudio is also the author of 12 textbooks and atlases of human anatomy for undergraduate students in medicine and surgery; He is a member of the Editorial Board of the international journals Hepatology, Digestive & Liver Disease, World Journal of Gastroenterology. He is a reviewer for the international journals Anatomical Record, J Anatomy, Gastroenterology, American Journal Physiology, J Clinical research, Am J Pathology; is a member of the International Advisory Council of “The Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations”; is director of the series ‘Netter Atlas of Anatomy, Physiopathology and Clinics’.
