Mayor Leoluca Orlando decided: Schools closed in Palermo since Monday due to the coronavirus epidemic. “Having recognized the lack of sending news on the state of the city’s hospitals and the general health of the health system at the regional level, with a possible very serious impact on the security conditions of citizens, and recognized the considerable increase of infections throughout the Region as well as in the city and the metropolitan area of Palermo, I reluctantly decided to arrange the closure of all compulsory schools in the city starting next Monday, ”the mayor wrote.
The mayor continued later: “I already announce it today so that families, school leaders and teachers prepare on time and do not face a last minute measure. It is a decision that is made with pain because I am aware that distance education, although it can be carried out with professionalism and passion, cannot guarantee that human relationship between teachers and students and that social relationship between young people who are an integral part of the learning process.
But precisely because we are facing a health emergency, I have to take responsibility for this provision, which aims to reduce travel around the city and therefore limit the risk of infections continuing to increase, which is an additional burden for the health system and for doctors who are already exhausted. That is precisely why I decided not to close the municipal nurseries, which are based on the territorial system and because the incidence of infections in these structures is 0.15% of the students, less than half that in primary school and around a fifth of the average ”.
It is not yet known how long the closure of the institutions will last, as Orlando himself pointed out: “This is a temporary measure because even more from Monday there will be a punctual and precise monitoring of the trend of infections and, hopefully, the situation of the hospitals, whose data will be evaluated so that the closure can be limited to the minimum necessary. Sorry I emphasize again, I had to make this decision, but I no longer believe that it is possible to postpone taking responsibility that weigh on our children and grandchildren ”.
