The schools of Apulia reopen, but the pediatricians of the family: “Keep your children at home” Emiliano: “Dad is now preferable”

BARI – Apulian pediatricians adhere to the approval of President Michele Emiliano’s ordinance by sending an unequivocal message: “Dear parents, do not send your children to school.” In addition, it was they who induced the governor of Puglia to close schools (until the 24th) before the partial change that in fact left families the option of having primary and secondary students study in the presence or remotely until the 3rd from December. “The data provided by the ASL of Bari – explains Luigi Nigri, national vice president of Fimp, the Italian federation of pediatricians – shows that it worked to prevent students from returning to class. Let me clarify one point: pediatricians are not against frequency in principle. God forbid. But right now the course of the epiphany and the tracking system allow no alternative to dad. We learn to a great extent from parents and students the positivity of schoolchildren, demonstrating the current limits of contact tracing. The position is almost unanimous among general practitioners.

“Unfortunately – continues Nigri – we have not yet activated the rapid test system to stop suspected cases in the bud. There appear to be, but in insufficient quantities. It remains to be determined how many pediatricians will intervene and what the locations of the sampling points will be. Both things are not possible in our clinics because in many cases they are not adequate, but above all because the priority is to keep the studies safe for other needs. Much more feasible is going to special places. We seem to be thinking about the districts and possibly the premises that some mayors have made available. We’ll see. Without a doubt, it is essential to organize in the best possible way because otherwise we will return to the starting point. The resumption of school activity today would again propose the emergency in a week.

María Chironna, biologist and head of the Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health laboratory at the Polyclinic, is of the same opinion. «The return in presence – he says – is a risk at this moment. And I say this with the awareness of the great blow that can be given to a world, that of schools, which undoubtedly deserves to be safeguarded. The damage that confinement has produced and can produce in children and adolescents is atrocious and documented. But protecting everyone’s health comes first. The school was also challenged by the fragility of the system that revolves around: transportation, organization, structural deficiencies, lack of planning, lack of staff to guarantee a different way of using the training. Of course, distance education is a defeat. But in an emergency it is at least an attempt not to generate gaps in training that would be insurmountable.

GOVERNOR EMILIANO: «I support the appeal of pediatricians: avoid sending children to school in their presence, this is safer both for children and for public health. Choose Dad, if possible, and from home, although with all the limitations, try to do everything possible, until the epidemiological data arrive.

This is the appeal addressed to families by the president of the Puglia region, the day on which the Pugliese schools, primary and secondary, must reopen as a result of last Friday’s decision of the Tar of Puglia to suspend the ordinance of the region that dad had ordered in all schools starting from elementary school.

Following the TAR’s decision, the President of the Region has issued a new ordinance that gives families the possibility to choose whether to use face-to-face or digital teaching.

And today the governor of Apulia reiterated the invitation to prefer distance education.

«We – continued Emiliano – must keep infections low. This is what the doctors say, and this is what the government itself says when it sends all high school students home, “because the government itself” considers face-to-face teaching dangerous, so it has decided to keep those older students who can learn a little better at a distance ».

“The father is not perfect – he added – but he is one of those tools that the government and Minister Azzolina provide for the anti-covid plan. So my ordinance, which I was forced to adopt because the TAR suspended my decision to keep face-to-face teaching completely blocked, does nothing more than apply the same rules that Minister Azzolina gave to the school ”.

“My ordinance just says this: carry out distance education everywhere, even where you haven’t been successful yet. Try to do it right, it could be useful not only in this moment of terrible heyday. But let’s also consider that in addition to the fact that there are many Covid-positive children at the moment, there are thousands of other quarantined children who cannot go to school.

“If dad doesn’t work well, it is the right to education for those in quarantine that is not guaranteed. Then Dad must realize, to make this controversy means to argue against a legitimate choice that the school itself has made.
