Piedmont hospitals are increasingly affected by coronavirus infections: on the day of a new blockade similar to last March in the “red” region, a photograph tells the current emergency better than many words. It was taken at the San Luigi de Orbassano hospital, in the province of Turin: in this structure, which already houses about 200 Covid-19 patients, another department dedicated to the coronavirus has been enabled within the church. Where until a few days ago the benches for the faithful were placed, some forty stretchers between the organ and the statue of San Luis were installed by the men of the regional Civil Protection. In the health center, the intensive care squares are occupied, as are about 35 helmets that are used to help patients breathe. Meanwhile, as Repubblica tells us, 6 lung ventilators are being tested and the hypothesis of retrofitting the conference room as a covid room, however, where the chairs are currently “bolted” to the floor, is being studied. The main pain point, however, is that of the workforce: the doctors and nurses on duty are exhausted and it would be assumed that all postgraduates would be needed, or at least those from the second year onwards.
The situation at the San Luigi hospital is emblematic and recalls what happened yesterday at the hospital from Rivoli, where dozens of field stretchers were placed on the floor to accommodate patients rushing to the emergency room as best they can. “This is an exceptional situation,” explained ASL To3, according to which the measure affected a limited number of patients. “The structures are suffering a lot and the patients keep coming but everyone receives assistance and has a bed,” added the ASL. Today the Councilor for Health Luigi Icardi said that a series of protocols are being applied to reduce hospitalizations, speed up discharge and improve home care. If this does not happen, the health system will not be able to last more than 10 or 12 days.
