In Vienna a maxi-police operation is underway where a shooting took place in the center, near the synagogue on Seitenstettengasse. According to the online edition of the Viennese newspaper Kurier, the total of the attack would be seven dead, including a policeman. There would also have been an explosion. Several shootings, according to the same source, would have taken place in different areas near the synagogue.
A policeman was handed over by other sources in serious condition after being shot. The shot was allegedly fired by one of the attackers with a “long-barreled” firearm, according to the Interior Ministry. One person was arrested. One attacker was killed and another is likely on the run, the Interior Ministry told Austrian news agency Apa.

The Viennese police are not currently ruling out a terrorist attack. Agents have fenced off the area. Helicopters fly over the area around the synagogue. The police appealed to residents to stay home.
The ministry, at the moment, does not confirm that it was an attack on the synagogue. The synagogue and adjoining offices were closed when the shots were fired. The editor of the weekly Falter Florian Klenk, who was in the newsroom, heard the shots and, looking out the window, saw a man fleeing towards Schwedenplatz. On Twitter he initially spoke of an attack on the synagogue, citing unspecified sources from the Interior Ministry, and then raised the hypothesis in a second tweet rather than an attack on a nearby bar.
