This morning, Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, archbishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve and president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, was transferred to the Hospital Santa Maria della Misericordia in Perugia. He tested positive for Covid last Wednesday. His condition worsened after some signs of improvement on Friday. At the hospital, his health status will be reviewed and monitored with probable use of instrumental tests, “the CEI said in a statement.” We continue to be close to the Cardinal President – declares Monsignor Stefano Russo, Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference. Let us accompany with prayer and love for the People of God, sure that the Lord will not lose his comfort and support in this trial.
Yesterday the CEI announced that on November 3 an extraordinary session of the permanent Episcopal Council will be held by videoconference, presided over by the vice president, Monsignor Mario Meini, bishop of Fiesole. We will talk about the pandemic, its spread and the Church’s initiatives in this regard.
The annual assembly of the Italian bishops is scheduled in Rome between November 16 and 19, postponed from last May precisely because of Covid. At the moment the appointment is confirmed, but sudden reconsiderations are not ruled out.
