Pine Scaccia, Rai’s historical correspondent died for COVID-19 shortly after 1:00 p.m. today, Wednesday, October 28. The journalist, born in 1946, had been hospitalized for weeks in a center of the capital due to coronavirus.
He was one of Rai’s correspondents. He has followed numerous events, from the first Gulf War to the Croatian Serb conflict, from the disintegration of the former Soviet Union and the former Yugoslavia, to the crisis in Afghanistan, in addition to the difficult post-war period in Iraq (where he was the last comrade Enzo Baldoni’s journey) until the revolt in Libya.
The race
He has done numerous reports around the world, he was the first Western reporter to enter the Chernobyl power plant after the disaster, discover the remains of Che Guevara in Bolivia and show the hitherto secret images of Area 51 in the Nevada desert. He also dealt with the news with special reference to the mafia, terrorism and kidnappings, as well as earthquakes and natural disasters.
Before becoming a blogger and writer full-time, he was editor-in-chief of Tg1’s special services. He was a professor in the master’s degree in radio and television journalism at the Lumsa University in Rome. He has written 15 books.
“There are no words,” commented his son Gabriele with emotion.
The community of Ostia, the district of the capital where he had chosen to live, suffers and is in shock.
