Lewis Hamilton won the Grand Prix of Portugal. On the Portimao track the English pilot of the Mercedes preceded his companion with great detachment Valtteri Bottas. For Lewis they are 92 career wins: never anyone like him. Third, Red Bull’s Max verstappen.
Finally smile there Ferrari: Charles Leclerc managed to hit the fourth place, confirming the progress observed throughout the weekend. It was since the 70th anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone that the Cavallino had not been able to go that high. Sebastian Vettel instead, it finished in tenth position.
Thanks to this result, Hamilton is close to the title, which could come in the Grand Prix of Turkey. Next week we return to Italy, to Imola, where the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will be held.
THE RACE
Turn immediately to the beginning. It starts to rain during the first laps, the situation on the track is chaotic and everything passes: Sainz takes the lead thanks to the red tire, behind him are the Mercedes of Bottas and Hamilton. Leclerc is sixth but with great difficulties, Vettel sixteenth.
Then the rain subsides and the Mercedes again take the lead, passing Sainz who begins to queue. The future Ferrari driver was also overtaken shortly after by Verstappen. Leclerc also climbs fast and, after passing Raikkonen and Sainz, returns to his fourth starting place.
The Monegasque’s Ferrari goes fast and approaches Verstappen. Ahead, the two Mercedes do another race.
On the 20th lap, Hamilton easily overtakes Bottas and regains first place. The Finn goes into crisis and loses not only his teammate, but also Verstappen and Leclerc who follow him.
Hamilton flies fast laps. It rains again, but the weather is still uncertain and the two Mercedes delay the entrance to the pits. After the unchanged pit stops between Verstappen and Leclerc, the Dutchman remains in third place.
In the end, Mercedes made a comeback too: Hamilton firmly remains in first place. The world champion immediately sends clear signals to Bottas with a series of fast laps: victory is now his. Behind Leclerc he cannot keep up with Verstappen and is satisfied with an excellent fourth position.
