(ANSA-AFP) – MADRID, OCTOBER 25 – The Spanish government has declared a state of health emergency throughout the country to deal with the new upswing in coronavirus cases. Premier Pedro Sánchez announced it. The new health alert provides for a curfew from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in all of Spain except the Canary Islands. For now, it will remain in force for 15 days but Sánchez’s goal is for it to last until May. “Our proposal, which will have to be discussed, will be to extend the state of alarm for six months, until May 9,” stressed the premier speaking on live television. “We already know what to do” against the coronavirus: “Stay home as long as you can,” said Sánchez. “We are not locked up, but the longer we are at home, the more protected we will be,” said the prime minister. The objective of the new state of emergency is to reduce the number of infections to less than 25 per 100,000 inhabitants. There are currently 400 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants in Spain. (ANSA-AFP).
