F1 GP Portugal, Bottas is fooling himself, but pole goes to Hamilton! Well Leclerc, fourth

Lewis Hamilton more and more in space: the Englishman from Mercedes has conquered the pole position of the Portuguese GP, 12th round of the 2020 F1 World Championship. For Lewis it is pole n. 97 of his career. He beat Valtteri Bottas, who thought he had hit the fastest time. Hamilton accomplished the feat on his second attempt on medium tires, when pole seemed to be in the hands of his teammate. Third time for the usual Max Verstappen with Red Bull, while an excellent fourth is Charles Leclerc with Ferrari. Sebastian Vettel, eliminated in Q2, will start 15th.

Hamilton has outdone himself, finding a new way to take pole. The worsening asphalt conditions in Q3 led the engineers to evaluate the use of medium tires rather than soft, theoretically faster. And when going out on track with the yellow, Lewis managed to find the maximum with the second quick attempt, against Bottas who had hit the first. At the checkered flag, the best moment was still Lewis’s. Well, Ferrari, who managed to find a beautiful second row with Leclerc. Behind him Sergio Pérez and Alex Albon.

So Q2 and Q1

In Q2, best time for Bottas and Hamilton’s Mercedes, who entered Q3 on medium tires. The same strategy for Leclerc’s Ferrari, which made the cut with the eighth fastest time: these three cars will start tomorrow on a slightly harder tire than the others, all of which went through the soft one. Starting with Verstappen, third followed by Pérez, Sainz, Norris, Gasly. Inside also Albon and Ricciardo, on the gravel at the end, but except with the last useful time for Q3. Instead, Ocon, Stroll, Kvyat, Russell and Vettel were eliminated with Ferrari.
In Q1 Hamilton fastest time ahead of Verstappen, Bottas, Pérez and Leclerc. Vettel took a chance because he lengthened into Turn 1 and his time was canceled. However, the German managed to make the cut with a quick last attempt from eighth place. George Russell enters for a mustache with the fifteenth time. The Alfa Romeos of Raikkonen and Giovinazzi, the Haas of Grosjean and Magnussen and the second Williams, that of Latifi, did not pass the elimination. Tomorrow the GP at 14.10.
