Florence, October 23, 2020 – New cases continue to increase. I am today 1,290 new positives for coronavirus (1,059 identified in the course of screening and 231 in detection activities) out of a total of 27,901 cases, registered since the beginning of the epidemic. Average age
The average age of 1,290 cases today is about 46 years (13% are under 20, 29% between 20 and 39, 32% between 40 and 59, 17% between 60 and 79, 9% have 80 years or older). Those cured grew 1.4% and reached 12,290 (44% of all cases).
The swabs performed reached 973,655, 11,378 more than yesterday. 7,442 subjects evaluated (excluding control swabs), of which 17.3% were positive. The current positives are 14,374 today, + 8.4% compared to yesterday. The people admitted to the beds dedicated to Covid patients today are a total of 656 (50 more than yesterday, plus 8.3%), 82 in intensive care (stable compared to yesterday). Today there are 8 new deaths: 3 men and 5 women with an average age of 85.6 years (3 in Florence, 2 in Massa Carrara, 1 in Pisa, 2 in Livorno). These are the data – verified today at 12 o’clock based on requests from the National Civil Protection – referring to the advance of the epidemic in the region. It should be remembered that as of June 24, 2020, the Ministry of Health has modified the data collection system on the spread of Covid-19. Positive cases are no longer indicated according to the province of notification but according to the province of residence or domicile.

The following are the cases of positivity in the area with the change from yesterday. Tuscany ranks ninth in Italy in terms of the number of cases (including residents and non-residents), with around 748 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (the Italian average is 772 x 100,000, yesterday’s figure). The reporting provinces with the highest rate are Massa Carrara with 1,090 cases x 100,000 inhabitants, Pisa with 877, Florence with 803, Grosseto with 422, the lowest. In total, 13,718 people are isolated at home, as they have mild symptoms, do not require hospital treatment or are asymptomatic (1,063 more than yesterday, plus 8.4%). There are 22,777 (2,540 more than yesterday, plus 12.6%) people, even isolated, under active surveillance, for having had contact with infected people (Asl Centro 9,370, Northwest 7,537, Southeast 5,870).
The healed
In total there are 12,290 people cured (169 more than yesterday, more 1.4%): 435 people clinically cured (45 less than yesterday, less 9.4%), that is, they became asymptomatic after presenting clinical manifestations associated with infection and 11,855 ( 214 more than yesterday, plus 1.8%) declared cured in all aspects, the so-called viral cures, with double negative swab.
The dead people
Today there are 8 new deaths: 3 men and 5 women with an average age of 85.6 years (3 in Florence, 2 in Massa Carrara, 1 in Pisa, 2 in Livorno). 1,237 have died since the beginning of the epidemic as follows: 452 in Florence, 58 in Prato, 87 in Pistoia, 188 in Massa Carrara, 149 in Lucca, 103 in Pisa, 68 in Livorno, 58 in Arezzo, 35 in Siena , 26 in Grosseto, 13 people died on Tuscan soil but were residents outside the region. Tuscany’s crude death rate (number of deaths / resident population) for Covid-19 is 33.2 x 100,000 residents against 61.2 x 100,000 for the Italian average (11th region). Regarding the provinces, the highest mortality rate is found in Massa Carrara (96.5 x100,000), Florence (44.7 x100,000) and Lucca (38.4 x100,000), the lowest in Grosseto (11.7 x 100,000).
