Covid, boom in positive cases: Lombardy ordinance imposes alternate distance lessons for secondary schools – School News

A little over a month, even on reduced hours. In Lombardy, face-to-face teaching lasted so long in this part of the school year: at the end of the third consecutive day of Covid-19 case registration, the region where at the end of last winter the infection developed most intensely, decides to put a first brake important to overcrowding in upper secondary schools. An ordinance of the Lombardy Region of October 16, signed by President Attilio Fontana, establishes that together with secondary vocational training institutions of the second grade, secondary schools must organize teaching activities with distance modalities alternating with face-to-face activities.

“The Lombards may be less concerned, but they must be vigilant to the measures, otherwise there is a risk that the epidemic will degenerate,” said Governor Fontana.

At school only a few days a week

The only lessons that will necessarily have to be done at school will be laboratory activities: for the rest, therefore, students will only go to school a few days a week and probably also at different times. In this way, the institutions seek to avoid crowds in public transport, which also involves a significant percentage of students at peak times.

The other measures

The Lombardy region also recommended organizing their activities in universities, with regard to specific autonomy, in order to promote distance education as much as possible: the only exception will be that of first-year and postgraduate students.

The provision for schools and universities is certainly not the only one contained in the mayor’s ordinance: even bars and restaurants must be closed from midnight on October 17 in Lombardy. Additionally, the region has declared war on nightlife: banning drinks on public lands after 6pm; for bars and restaurants, after 6 pm the consumption of food and beverages will only be allowed at the tables. In addition, more controls will be implemented.

Other blocks too

The ordinance also contains the cessation of all autonomous regional amateur sports competitions that involve physical contact, including those in the youth sector including training, as well as the closure of gaming halls, betting halls and bingo. The Lombardy Region, in agreement with the mayors, will also ask the government for an increase in the participation of smartworking for all activities in which it is possible to implement it.
