Covid in Naples, the president of the Scotti Order: “We doctors at war without arms or shields”

Quick pads to deflate large quantities that clog toilets. The administration of the flu vaccine and then, again, the predictable assault that will unleash in the clinics in the coming weeks. In his dual capacity as National Secretary of the Italian Federation of General Practitioners and President of the Order of Doctors of the Province of Naples, Silvestro Scotti He is already very clear about his ideas about the next few days: “But if we are talking about assault – he says – let it be clear that I am not going to drag the army, who are my fellow GPs, to war, without the necessary weapons and shields. Unfortunately, the shortcomings we noted earlier are still there.
Apart from the metaphor, Scotti, who participates in the 77th National Fimmg Congress in Villasimius in Sardinia, knows well that the future, in Naples and Campania, is still full of unknowns.

President, five million quick swabs go to family doctors. How will you handle this delicate front-line task?
“The Government asked for our availability and we accepted the invitation, but with a specific condition: that each colleague is in a position to operate with maximum security. And yet, for now at least, this preliminary condition is missing. We also take into account that in our studies we are dealing with patients who may currently be asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic, that is, subjects with low intensity of symptoms. With all the attendant risks.
What do you need now?
“The equipment provided will be sufficient for a maximum of ten days: I mean protective goggles, Plexiglas barriers, but also disposable gloves and masks. In short, everything you need without which you would work messy. I have already raised the issue in the appropriate forums and with the direct participation of Minister Speranza. Also taking into account that the seasonal influenza vaccination campaign has begun and therefore these sanitary devices are more than ever doubly necessary: it must be taken into account that to administer the flu the doctor must protect himself adequately by wearing, just for example, a Double pair of gloves to avoid being pricked by the syringe needle. The protection of the health worker remains essential ”.

But is your category really doing everything it can to help you get through this difficult time? You have nothing to blame yourself for?
“I don’t think we can be blamed for anything. We are the front line for healthcare and the underprivileged. And we run the risk of falling ill without an adequate model of territorial assistance ».
Did you also hear from Emergency Commissioner Arcuri?
“Sure. And I’ll write to you soon outlining these primary needs. And, perhaps, to reiterate an old question. The question is always the same: why are these devices being passed on to local health authorities?”

Let’s go back to flu shots. As expected, this year the number of those who decide to undergo it will increase. Do we have enough stocks?
“The vaccines in question this year in Campania will increase by 20 percent compared to last year and, at this moment, no one can predict and say that we will have full coverage. It must be taken into account that today it was decided to extend this prophylaxis to include children from six months to six years and an audience of adults even younger than those who can be defined as elderly ”.
Going back to molecular swab processing, what do you think of overlapping delays in report delivery?
“Let’s leave an important point: this task was assigned to us without haggling. But, beyond this, the family doctor is called to check if the patient is positive or negative without even a filter, as a warning in the endless lists of processed swabs. In short, we are also forced to complain about shortcomings and loopholes in this.
