Every electoral campaign, as we know, always begins with a smokescreen: a haze of names, hypotheses of agreement between contenders, more or less clandestine pacts. The finish line is rarely reached with the same stride, or the same foot, with which the race started. It is also happening in Rome, with the rumors about the candidacy of Massimo Giletti for the center-right and the alternative hypotheses of Calenda and Barça for the center-left, which Mario Ajello tells in his article in the newspaper. Important names, undoubtedly authoritative, if placed in their professional context. But these are probably not the profiles that Rome needs right now.
And worse would be if the dem really organized the primaries evoked by Secretary Zingaretti. Because the names of the competitors circulated so far are even further away from the mayor model that can really relaunch the capital. An example above all: that of the candidacy of Giovanni Caudo, today president of the third municipality, the day before yesterday the urban planning councilor of the old Marino city council, in whose role he took care of the Tor di Valle stadium despite being linked to the constructor Parnasi, I wanted to achieve the same stage.
And again, much was said about the urban events of Bufalotta, in the extreme northwest of the town hall that today governs.
Caudo, to say the least, is still closely linked to that system of subdivision of politics that for decades has stolen the life of the capital, and that finds in the dem Goffredo Bettini the most authoritarian and isolated strategist. And that’s not all, because Giovanni Caudo, undoubtedly one of the most successful in the race for the primaries, casually tells us that he is still under investigation for the renovation of the so-called Eur towers. “I met with the prosecutor and I think I have clarified everything, so I will move on, “he said in a recent interview with the newspaper Il Tempo.
In short, after the necessary premises about the fact that the names we start with are (almost) never those of the final candidates, we nevertheless give the impression that the race started on the wrong foot. Let’s see why.
The hypothesis of nominating a famous journalist, rather than a mini-mayor under investigation, denounces how minimalist the project that the two parties have in the capital is. Here we need a great idea. Rome must once again be the center of the country’s political and economic debate. The city, partly due to the card and subdivision system that characterized some of the more recent towns, has reached a level of urban decay that is unknown. It means that this city, from which companies, institutions, and sporting events have been gradually emerging, can now only be reborn if it is governed by a figure with strong management skills, equipped with a team of technicians who recover the forgotten sectors of the administration Capitoline public: transportation, public employment, roads, public parks, sports, schools, commerce. We need a conductor to conduct a symphony of rebirth with the work of his musical teachers. And that is able to indicate other winning teams at the top of the municipal companies adrift.
All of this cannot be guaranteed by a party leader, even if he has authority. Or by a representative of civil society with little experience in managing public affairs. The former will have to follow the directives of the party in the election of managers based on clientelist criteria, as has happened in the past, due to the senseless logic that governs electoral flows. The second, for different reasons, must also rely on the indications of those who projected it on the command bridge of the Capitol.
The Romans honestly need more. It is not just another experiment, it is not another denial of the sense of modesty. The capital cannot be anyone’s laboratory.
