In Italy, there is an acceleration of the progressive worsening of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic reported over ten weeks, which is reflected in a significant workload on local health services. For the first time there are important critical elements related to the spread of the virus in our country. This was confirmed by the weekly monitoring of the Ministry of Health-Higher Institute of Health for the week of September 28 to October 4.
In the period from September 17 to 30, 2020, the Rt transmissibility index calculated in symptomatic cases is equal to 1.06. At the national level, the number of hospitalized people continues to increase (3,287 versus 2,846 in the medical area, 303 versus 254 in intensive care on 10/4 and 9/27, respectively) and, consequently, the occupancy rates of hospitalizations in the area. medical and intensive care.
“The number of Covid-19 cases increases for the tenth consecutive week, but this time a little more than in previous weeks. RT slightly exceeds unity. There are outbreaks and sporadic cases in all regions and the number of hospitalizations tends to increase, even if there is no intensive care overload ”: Gianni Rezza, general director of the Ministry of Health Prevention, comments to the weekly follow-up Iss -Ministry. At this stage, he adds, “we must be extremely cautious, absolutely avoid aggregations and events, both public and private, always wear a mask, use physical distancing measures and take care of hand hygiene.”
A total of 3,805 active outbreaks were reported, of which 1,181 new (the adopted definition of an outbreak foresees the identification of 2 or more positive cases linked to each other), both increasing for the tenth consecutive week (in the previous follow-up week they had been reported 3,266 active outbreaks of which 909 new). Outbreaks have been reported in almost all provinces (104/107). Most of these outbreaks continue to occur at home (77.6%). The percentage of outbreaks detected in recreational activities continues to decline (4.1% compared to 4.5% the previous week).
Outbreaks in which transmission may have occurred in the school setting are increasing slightly this week. However, the overall transmission dynamics remains limited equal to 2.5% of all new outbreaks in which the transmission context was reported. The number of new cases outside of transmission chains continues to rise, according to the report. There are 4,041 cases in which an epidemiological link could not be found (there were 3,026 the previous week).
