1% of the 36,008 patients who died from the coronavirus were under the age of 50. There are 407 in total: 89 were under 40 years of age and, of them, 14 had not been diagnosed with significant pathologies. The data comes from the Report updated to October 4 of the ISS, the Higher Institute of Health, on the characteristics of patients who died positive for infection in Italy, prepared by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Iss).
Average age is 80
The mean age of the deaths also increased in the three summer months. “The data – writes the ISS in a tweet – can be explained by a greater knowledge of the infection and a greater ability to cure.” The mean age of the deceased and positive Sars-Cov-2 patients is 80 years and is more than 25 years older than that of those who contracted the infection.
Deaths of people with 3 or more diseases increase
When comparing the characteristics of deaths in the two quarters March-May and June-August 2020, the report observes that in the second quarter the average age increases slightly (from 77.8 to 81.7 years) and the deaths of people with 3 or more pre-existing pathologies.

Atrial fibrillation and dementia especially, more than doubled. Respiratory failure was the most common complication in deceased patients (94.7% of cases), followed by acute kidney injury (23.2%), superinfection (18.2%), and acute myocardial injury ( 10.9%)).
Therapies used
Antibiotic therapy was commonly used during hospitalization (86.6% of cases), antiviral therapy was used less (57.9%), and corticosteroid therapy more rarely (43.5%). The three therapies were used in 1,138 cases (26.3%).
