“Face covered with relatives”

Conte:

The alarm in the government for the second wave of the Covid epidemic is growing. It grows to such an extent that Giuseppe Conte, looking serious as in the days of the hardest confinement, at night decides to leave Palazzo Chigi to recommend “rigor” and “prudence” even inside the home. Masks even in families. Because only in this way, the message is not too implicit, we will avoid going back to the dramatic months of total closure when Italians were forced to stay at home. The subject of the family is delicate and Conte does not hide it: «The State, of course, cannot establish family relationships and private homes if it is not absolutely necessary.

Mandatory masks

It is a sacrosanct liberal-democratic principle. Therefore, we cannot ask citizens to wear a mask in their homes, nor would it be reasonable to keep it between people who live together under the same roof all day. But I allow myself to make a strong recommendation to all Italians: even in the family we must be careful. Are there elderly, fragile and vulnerable people? Well, we also respect the distance in the family, in private homes. We wear the mask if we get close. And if we receive friends or relatives who do not live with us and come from the other side of the city, be careful. Friends and family relationships, as experts tell us, are the times when contagion spreads the most.

Covid, Conte: “Curva is climbing, respect the distance even at home. It also masks with friends and family”

“The contagion curve is increasing, so we have decided to extend the state of emergency until January 31.” This was stated by Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte speaking in front of Palazzo Chigi. Covid, today’s newsletter October 7, 2020: 3,678 new infections and 31 deaths. Never so many since mid-April.

Conte, in his appeal, adds: “So far we have managed the epidemic with rigor, cohesion, with the participation of all and with a sense of responsibility. If we renounce this sense of responsibility and this willingness to make more sacrifices for the common good, we will run into difficulties. Italy will probably fall into a new blockade. After all, the epilogue is no longer excluded not even by Roberto Speranza, Minister of Health: “We work day and night to avoid it.”

APPEAL
That said, Conte excludes ad hoc measures at home: “It would not make sense to dictate rules that cannot be specifically sanctioned. But I appeal to the spirit of sharing a project and a common destiny on the part of the national community. This has been our strength, this has been the sign of our resilience. Hence the strong recommendation to adopt appropriate behaviors even in the family. In short, “rigor” and “sense of responsibility” even within the home to avoid “new restrictive measures for productive and social activities.” Why is there so much concern about the contagion that runs in family gatherings and private events? Example: in two small towns in the province of Rome, Sant’Angelo and Poli, in two different baptisms there were forty infected. The data: according to last week’s report from the control room of the Ministry of Health “the percentage of outbreaks that occurred within the family remains stable (76.5 percent).

The percentage of outbreaks verified in the workplace is increasing (7.2), while outbreaks associated with recreational activities are decreasing (4.5) ». When we are in the family, but also at events that bring family members together such as a dinner, a baptism or a funeral, the transmission of the virus is rampant. Until mid-September, according to those involved in the tracking, the outbreaks were caused by young people who had become infected during holidays or at night gatherings. Of them, the virus reached the elderly, parents and grandparents, and then spread in family gatherings. Few outbreaks have recently been identified in bars, restaurants or shopping centers, because we use the mask. Even in public transport, no clusters were recorded (although an infection cannot be ruled out), while in some regions such as Emilia-Romagna and Veneto, outbreaks have been identified in factories, small businesses and centers. Logistics. But it is in the family (or more generally in events with family and friends) where we feel safe and run the risk of becoming infected or transmitting the virus. Experts and the government consider with great concern what will happen in two months, when the trips and family gatherings for the Christmas holidays begin. If the contagion curve does not drop, countermeasures could be taken. Beyond the rules, a sense of responsibility must apply: the eighteen-year-old who leaves high school and goes to visit his grandmother, if he wants to protect her, he must wear the mask and, however difficult it may be, keep his distance. Affection is also shown in this way.
