“Some people are unrecoverable, they will never change their mind” – Libero Quotidiano

At the moment, Piero Angela seems more interested in hair biographies (yes, that’s correct: in hair) than Covid. In fact, there is no trace of the epidemic in his Superquark + program, whose second edition, available from today on Rai Play, deals with the most disparate issues such as the biography of hair, the new frontiers of DNA, the matter of the universe. But of viruses and related pestilences, nothing: not even a sequence …

However, precisely for RaiPlay, he had bet on the virus. Why not return to the subject, which is very topical?
“We have given our contribution: we have explained how the virus works, we know that it attacks cells and lungs. From now on it’s just a behavior problem. Among other things, Superquark + is a program designed to last in time: your vision should not burn out overnight. That is why we avoid current events. Our goal is to improve the scientific culture of our country.

An arduous goal, given the recent number of landowners, deniers and citizens who improvise virologists …
“For a long time I was preoccupied with the psychology of magic. I even founded a Committee for the defense of science, the Cicap. And do you know what I understand? Some people are unrecoverable. You can give them all the speeches you want, give them millions of tests, but they will never change their mind. “

Are Deniers Unrecoverable?
“Anyone who thinks that their own personal intuition about the vaccine is sharper than that of doctors and virologists, is: there is no hope for them. Other deniers are simply misinformed. In this case they are recoverable, some faster and others less ».

As a citizen, how do you assess the current Italian situation?
«Every night the Tg reports, with its reports, meetings of people without masks. There is not enough pressure on the public to enforce simple anti-Covid rules. Young people feel invulnerable, but it is a mistake to underestimate the virus: some heads of state and government know something about it … ».

Would you therefore be in favor of the use of the army in the streets, to ensure the spacing and use of the mask?
“I think it would be useful because, sorry, we are talking about a deadly virus! Who does not use the mask is a bit like a greaser. Think of AIDS patients: there are people who have been convicted in court because, even knowing they were sick, they did not inform their partner and had unprotected sex. Now, I am certainly not invoking jail for those who forget the mask, but to enforce the rules. Respect must be fostered.

Are you also concerned about the national system?
“Covid is a virus that also attacks companies and the market. The risk that the country’s economy jumps is real: that is why we must understand that distancing is not a purely personal choice.”

In this chaos of pseudoscientific opinions (not just about Covid, sadly), what is the role of scientific popularization?
Someone said, “Science is the highest form of common sense.” Here, I back it up. What has always fascinated me about science is its method: we do not chase the emotions of the day, but we try to be foresight, showing the consequences of what happens. I feel like a man at the service of the State: my political reference is Sergio Mattarella and all the presidents of the Republic who preceded him and who will succeed them ”.
