“I apologize for what Antonio did”

Lecce, boyfriends murdered. The killer's mother:

From mother to mother. From the pain of a woman for having discovered a murderous son to the pain of two women because their children have lost them. And for this today Rosalba Cavalera De Marco apologizes. She is the mother of Antonio, the 21-year-old murderer confessed to the referee Daniele de santis, 33, and his girlfriend of 30 Eleonora Manta, stabbed to death in the house where they had decided to live in Lecce on the afternoon of September 21. Antonio De Marco has been in prison for a week for the crime. It is isolated. The first and for the moment the only contact he had with his family since the day of his arrest was yesterday, an hour-long interview with his older sister. Outside those walls, his mother Rosalba has now decided to write a letter to the mothers of the two victims. “I apologize for what Antonio did, although I realize that it is very little compared to the terrible wound that was inflicted on you,” he wrote.

“Once again I apologize for my presumption – he continues – because when I found out about your drama, and I still did not know that it was caused by my son, I thought I could understand your mother’s pain, but it was not like that. Only now that I too, although in another way, feel that same suffering, can I really be aware of your pain and share it within me.

In the letter, the woman writes that “there is certainly a reason why the bond between mother and child is never broken. Perhaps for the nine months in which you feel it inside, or for that cord that still ties you when it comes to light, or for that strong and intense pain that you suffer when you bring it into the world. A pain that you do not forget and that sometimes returns, as it certainly came back in you, a thousand and a thousand times stronger and more atrocious, just as it came back in me, although to a degree not comparable to yours, when I learned that it was my son who also it tore at their hearts.

That son whose gesture was described by the investigators as “unstoppable violence”, as a crime “of ruthless brutality, wickedness and inhuman cruelty”, perfected with a “chilling set of cruel and atrocious behaviors”, including “preventive torture of the victims that it must have lasted 10 to 15 minutes and the message that was written on the wall was evidently in his blood ».
