This year, Amazon’s Prime Day, the ecommerce site’s biggest second promotional anniversary after Black Friday, will be October 13-14. It was supposed to be in July, like previous years, but it had been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, as always, the discounts offered by Amazon for the occasion will be reserved for Prime users, that is, those who have subscribed to the annual subscription to Amazon that entitles them to various benefits, including free shipping. This is the first thing to know to take advantage of Prime Day to do business; we have also gathered the others.
How long will Prime Day last?
Since 2018 Prime Day is no longer a day, that is, it no longer lasts 24 hours: like last year it will last 48 hours, that is, two days. It will begin at oo.o1 on Tuesday, October 13 and will end at 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14. Shifted by time zones, it will also be in 18 other countries, including Turkey and Brazil for the first time.
However, like all Amazon promotional recurrences, Prime Day, in a sense, has already begun: many discounts are already announced and are valid from the page of the site dedicated to the occasion.
How to subscribe to Prime
Those who are not subscribed to Amazon Prime and want to take advantage of the discounts these days (to get ahead with Christmas gifts? Really?) Can join the program from here. In Italy the subscription costs 36 euros per year (18 if you are a university student, in this case we are talking about Prime Student) or 3.99 euros per month, while in the United States, where e-commerce is much more popular among us, Over the years the price has risen: it now costs $ 119. There is a 30-day free trial period (90 if you’re a college student) and the subscription also includes the ability to use the Amazon Prime video streaming platform.

How to recognize really affordable discounts
Perhaps the most important thing to know about promotional periods like Prime Day is that not all offers are as affordable as they seem. Amazon calculates your discounts based on the original price the item for sale (the first price at which it was sold since it existed, essentially) and not the price it had reached before the discounts. This is important to know because promotional items often now have already been in the past, or their price had already dropped and therefore the discount of now not a big discount, actually. In other words: the prices are really discounted, but not always by as much as the percentages indicated.
To understand how much you would actually save, you can use some tools that allow you to monitor the price trend of products sold on Amazon over time. One is Camelcamelcamel, a site where you only need to insert the link to the product that interests you to see a graph of the changes in its price on Amazon over time and know if it had already cost less in the past. Alternatively, there is Keepa, of which you can also download an extension to view the price trend graph directly on the Amazon product page; in this old article there is an example that lets you see how. Keepa also reports any offers on eBay, for a price comparison.
It may also be useful to download Amazon Assistant, a free Amazon plug-in whose main purpose is to display Amazon prices every time you look at products in another e-commerce: therefore, it is part of a strategy to convince you to buy only Amazon, but recently it also has a feature that shows how the price of a product has changed on the site in the last 30 days.
The other thing to remember is that most products discounted during promotional periods will likely be discounted again in the future, so if the offers don’t seem completely satisfactory to you, you can always save the products that interest you in your wish list and check periodically: or for future promotional occasions like Black Friday, which will be at the end of November, how much they cost.
