Monsignor Giovanni D’Alise, 72-year-old bishop of Caserta, received a rapid molecular swab that tested positive. In four days, the high prelate was attacked by Covid-19 and did not succeed at dawn. According to the Caserta Health Hospital, Monsignor D’Alise’s clinical picture was aggravated by kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, hypertensive heart disease, and dyslipidemia. The doctors tried to apply all the therapeutic protocols planned to combat the Coronavirus and they were also administered the new antiviral drug Remdesivir but at 6 am there was cardiac arrest and at 6.30, after cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers, death was confirmed. . Ironically, D’Alise had raised his voice several times to urge the faithful to wear the mask and respect the distancing to fight the virus. In addition, he had pointed out the danger that many citizens, suddenly finding themselves in financial difficulties due to the pandemic, would fall into the hands of usurers and gangsters.

Monsignor D’Alise was ordained bishop in 2004 and had led the Diocese of Caserta for more than six years when he replaced Monsignor Pietro Farina, who also died during his episcopal tenure. D’Alise was ordained a priest in 1972 and from 2001 to 2004 he was vicar of Foraneo de la Forania di San Felice – Arienzo. Catholic churches in Europe are paying a heavy price for the pandemic: 400 priests and religious elders have died after contracting the coronavirus.
