“He’s in a good mood, he said he feels like he could get out of here today,” the staff said, adding that the patient asked for hydroxychloroquine, the controversial treatment he promoted at the start of the pandemic, but is not hiring him. “It’s going well, I think,” the president himself tweeted that night. The doctors, however, explained that they are not able to predict the moment of hospital discharge, which fuels the uncertainty that weighs on the country, the elections and the markets. Uncertainty aggravated by an «insider», who after the briefing confided to the journalists a less optimistic situation: «The vital functions of the president have been very worrying in the last 24 hours and the next 48 hours will be crucial in terms of attention. We are not yet on a clear path to a full recovery. Neither age (74) nor proven obesity play in Trump’s favor. The press conference also raised some doubts. The first concerns the timing of the diagnosis, which Conley tracked 72 hours ago – that is, until Wednesday, before news of the president’s Covid positivity broke Thursday night.
The White House specified that Conley meant that today is the third day since the test came back positive. The second question is related to the fact that the doctor today leaked the question of whether Trump needed oxygen. A hypothesis relaunched by CNN according to which respiratory support was needed on Friday. Doubts that reinforce the controversy over the White House’s lack of transparency about the health conditions of the president, who is currently being treated with Remdesivir and another experimental therapy: a cocktail of synthetic polyclonal antibodies. As for First Lady Melania, also infected, “she is fine” and “is convalescing at home,” the doctors said.
Trump is the first president to be hospitalized after Ronald Reagan, who was injured in an attack 39 years ago. On that occasion, however, the powers passed to his deputy George HW Bush. Instead, “Donald” decided not to hand over the helm to Mike Pence and stay at the forefront of the nation from Walter Reed’s presidential suite, presenting himself to his fans as a warrior who defies Covid’s nemesis. From his hospital bed, he has not given up either tweeting or campaigning: “The doctors, the nurses and the entire great Walter Reed Medical Center, and the staff of so many incredible institutions that have joined them, they are extraordinary! Great progress has been made in the last 6 months in fighting this pest. With your help I feel good! ”He wrote, before inviting Democrats and Republicans to work together on new aid against the pandemic.
But his campaign is getting complicated: Campaign manager Bill Stepien and a dozen other people, including three senators, are also infected, risking the confirmation of conservative judge Amy Coney Barrett in the supreme court before the vote of 3 November. The initial outbreak of the infection may have been last Saturday’s ceremony at the White House to announce his appointment.
