Debora Donnini – Vatican City

It is a small place of meditation, visited every year by thousands of people from the 4 corners of the world. In the crypt of the lower Basilica, Pope Francis celebrates Mass and at the end, on the tomb of the Poverello of Assisi, he signs his third encyclical, “All Brothers”, dedicated to fraternity and social friendship, values that are extremely essential. to restore hope. and promoting a humanity wounded also by the Covid-19 pandemic. An encyclical that takes its name from the words of Saint Francis and that will be presented tomorrow. By signing, the applause of those present immediately follows.

Thanks to the First Section of the Secretary of State

Pope Francis did not deliver the homily. It is the prayer, the silence, the simplicity that mark this visit that, at the wish of the Pope for the health situation, is carried out without the participation of the faithful.

And the liturgy is precisely that of the feast of Saint Francis, which the Church celebrates on October 4. Immediately before signing, the Pope wanted to thank the First Section of the Secretary of State that worked on the drafting and translation of the Encyclical.

Now I will sign the Encyclical that brings to the altar Monsignor Paolo Braida, who is in charge of translations and also of the Pope’s speeches, in the First Section. He oversees everything and that is why I wanted him to be here today and bring me the Encyclical. Two translators also accompanied him: Don Antonio, translator of the Portuguese language: he translated from Spanish into Portuguese; and Don Cruz, who is Spanish and has somewhat supervised the other translations of the Spanish original. I do this as a sign of gratitude to the entire First Section of the Secretary of State that worked on this writing and translation.

The stops of the nuns of Spello and Assisi

On his trip to Assisi, the Pope stopped at the Monastery of Vallegloria in Spello, then arrived in the city of San Francisco and made a brief stop at the Protomonastery of Santa Chiara to greet the Poor Clares. After arriving at the Basilica, which has kept the remains of the Umbrian saint since 1230, the Pope was received by the custodian of the Sacred Convent of Assisi, Father Mauro Gambetti. Twenty friars, some religious, also participated in the Eucharistic celebration, along with the bishop of the diocese, Domenico Sorrentino, and Cardinal Agostino Vallini, papal legate of the basilicas of San Francisco and Santa Maria degli Angeli of Assisi. It is the fourth time that Pope Francis has gone to Assisi.
