Across the country, emergency plans are already in place to allow structures to face a new wave of infections. The specialized departments and Covid hospitals created in March, which during the summer period – thanks to the decline in the epidemic – were closed or converted to accommodate patients with other pathologies, are reopening today. From north to south, as Corriere della Sera, the facilities will offer 11 thousand beds in intensive care: this is 115% more than those available before closing.
The situation in Lombardy, Veneto and Piedmont Interventions vary from one Region to another. In Lombardy, the most affected by the emergency, 17 hospitals are ready to open the doors of intensive care to serious cases of coronavirus: 7 are already active (2 more than in summer), another 2 have been alerted. The plan drawn up by Pirellone foresees up to 1,400 beds with oxygen. In Piedmont, a new structure with 80 places will see the light in November, while in October the hospitals will communicate to the Region the list of operational departments of Covid. In Veneto there are 9 ready-to-use Covid hospitals and 840 places in intensive care that will be available on October 30.
The plans of Liguria, Tuscany and Lazio While in Liguria, where a 4-color alert status is in force according to severity, some hospitals are already in the red zone, in Tuscany there are 5 Covid hospitals created to deal with the pandemic. In Lazio, where the Region speaks of “phase 6”, the emergency protocol foresees the activation of 261 intensive and semi-intensive care places: with the health reorganization, the total number of beds amounts to 1,127. The hotels are also ready to use as hospice in case of need.
The interventions in Puglia, Campania and Calabria Relative calm in the south In Puglia “it is not yet necessary to make agreements with private structures”, explains new regional councilor Pierluigi Lopalco. In Calabria the Region ensures that in 24 hours the capacity of the hospitals can be doubled. On the other hand, Campania is worrying, where the increase in cases has been marked in recent weeks. Here the 5 Covid hospitals are already operational; Covid resorts are also preparing to house the positives who do not have spaces to ensure isolation from home.
Ricciardi: “The first wave never ends” “There is no second wave of coronavirus because the zeroing of cases has never occurred.” Thus Walter Ricciardi, consultant to the Ministry of Health. “Actually,” he added, “the first wave has never ended: what we have done is flatten the epidemic curve but it has never cleared. It has resumed.”
