The problem is not the risk that the doses of vaccine the fight against the flu is insufficient, because we will not be without it, but some sensitive categories decide not to. Doctors, for example. “It has also happened in the recent past and I am surprised that many colleagues are reluctant. It is an ethical duty, ”says Ranieri Guerra, deputy director of the World Health Organization (WHO) and member of the government’s scientific-technical committee.
“Flu, the vaccine will not be enough”, alarm from pharmacies: only 12 doses for each exercise
Doctor Guerra, what are the dangers if a significant part of the population is not vaccinated?
“The most recent data shows that when the flu spreads, in Italy we have between four and five million cases, so we face massive pressure on health services and hospitals. This year, to compound the situation, the fact that the symptoms could be confused with those of Covid is added and this puts more stress on the health system. It is important that the entire population most at risk is vaccinated: the elderly and children are vulnerable and get sick. But it is essential that doctors and those who work in hospitals do so as well, with a clear risk of contracting the disease from being in contact with patients and to protect the patients themselves who could become infected.
With the flu on the way, the number of coronavirus positives is also growing. Is there a danger of a second wave?
“Actually, the first wave never ended. This is a virus with a very predictable behavior: we have tested it in the most difficult phases and also when the number of infections has started to decrease. It has a trend that we can calculate and we know that it will grow again, the increase in cases will occur because we are going towards the cold season and we spend more time indoors. France has carried out controls on the causes of the infection by analyzing an impressive series of cases and the result is that a third come from schools and universities. It is unavoidable”.
Just Paris proposes a closure in the first twenty days of December. Is another blockade in Italy feasible?
“The data we have does not indicate the need for a new block. We are on alert, but not in an emergency situation like France, we also have a better structure and management capacity. Certainly the numbers suggest caution, however at the moment you don’t need to close anything. I hope it continues like this.
If the image shows criticality, are Italian hospitals prepared? According to some estimates, two out of every three health facilities would not hold out.
“There has been a strengthening, the government has invested a lot both in the territorial part, in the first line, and in hospitals, from internal medicine to intensive and sub-intensive therapies. The construction of mobile structures to move as needed, where the number of patients exceeds the number of beds is also evaluated. At the moment, in any case, I see a generalized management capacity throughout Italy, the reorganization and strengthening has taken place and the Regions have been cohesive. The politicization of the epidemic, which is a constant risk, does not seem to me to have happened. The governors have understood.
Would it be necessary to divert part of the money provided by the State Savings Fund to Healthcare?
“In comparison with investments in health, I am convinced that they are never enough. We have a public health system that in any case must be strengthened: this is not an expense, but a structural investment that puts the country in safety. During the emergency of the coronavirus, many patients could not guarantee the continuity of care for pathologies that progress in any case. I am referring to oncological treatments, those for chronically ill patients, they are people who have daily needs that cannot be interrupted by a criticality The pandemic is a bad parenthesis that we must leave behind and that the system manages with security, but routine care has suffered strong repercussions.
In all this, do you think it is feasible to reopen stadiums to 25% of their capacity, Dr. Guerra?
«Why cause more outbreaks of risk? Between schools and kindergartens, there are 20 million more people in contact with each other, plus 50% of the civil service employees who return to the office. It is a cluster of dangers that we are capable of managing, let’s see what happens and let’s not add more ».
