Covid-19 is not transmitted from the positive mother to the newborn during breastfeeding. This was revealed by a study, coordinated by the City of Health of Turin, published in the international scientific journal Frontiers in Pediatrics. Conducted in the largest series of cases in Europe, all breastfed infants following the recommended rules in these cases (use of masks, hand washing, cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and objects in use) did not show signs of disease. Therefore, for the study, breast milk is safe. The study was coordinated by the University Neonatology of the Sant’Anna Hospital of the City of Health of Turin, directed by Professor Enrico Bertino, and by the University Laboratory of Molecular Virology of the Department of Clinical and Biological Sciences, directed by Professor David Lembo. In addition to the hospital neonatology of Sant’Anna directed by Dr. Daniele Farina, the neonatology of the Mauriziano and Maria Vittoria hospitals in Turin and those of the Alessandria, Aosta and San Martino hospitals in Genoa participated. On the other hand, the molecular analyzes of the milk samples were carried out in the Hospital Microbiology Laboratories of the City of Health and the San Luigi Gonzaga hospital, directed respectively by Professor Rossana Cavallo and by Dr. Giuseppina Viberti, assisted in this study by Dr. Giuseppe De Renzi. “These results are reassuring for mothers and health professionals who deal with maternal and child health,” explains Professor Bertino. The research also supports recent WHO recommendations that, despite the limited information available so far, considering all the benefits, including immunological benefits, of breastfeeding, recently recommended it for positive mothers as well. ” We have been studying the antiviral properties of breast milk for several years and we have identified new active components that could protect the infant from viral infections, “adds Professor Lembo. This is also why, with few exceptions, breastfeeding is an important resource. for the health of the newborn “.
