He ran over a group of tourists with his truck and killed a woman. The tragedy, yesterday afternoon, in the central square of Monforte d’Alba, shortly after 4:00 p.m. A forty-two-year-old Savigliano, aboard his Mercedes Glc 250, was driving along Via Alba, towards the center of the city, at high speed. So much so that the owner of a gift shop, which overlooks the street, upon seeing him arrive invited him to slow down: the driver, in response, made a vulgar gesture, continuing the race. In Piazza Umberto I, in front of the “Vinoland” winery, the car skidded, hitting the terrace railing and making the vases fly. The SUV continued the race and after having run over the bicycles of a German couple who had finished having lunch at the “Da Tino” bar, next to the winery, it ran over a group of pedestrians (two couples, one Italian and the other German and a Belgian tourist). The impact was very violent: all five were thrown into the air. The 67-year-old Fiorangela Ghiglio, originally from Milan but living in Turin, was overwhelmed while she was close to her husband.

“I was inside the restaurant – says Laura, co-owner of the bar with her husband Tino – and I heard a shot, it looked like a bomb had exploded. I even thought of an attack. I went outside and saw those bodies on the ground. Customers on their feet, in shock. I immediately called 112 ».

The owners and customers left the shops in the square. Someone approached the wounded, trying to help them. Some witnesses reported that the driver of the truck seemed not to realize the tragedy: the man also had a fight with the people in the square, so much so that he ran the risk of lynching: he was arrested by a police patrol from the Monforte police station and accompanied in the barracks. You will be tested to see if you were drunk or high. Asti’s prosecutor has opened an investigation.

First aid came from the 118 ambulances and fire brigades from Alba and Dogliani. Given the seriousness of the situation, two air ambulances also intervened, which transferred the German couple (both 62 years old) to the Santa Croce hospital in Cuneo, in code yellow; while the victim’s husband (78 years old) and the Belgian tourist (60), a guest of an accommodation in Castagnole Lanze, were hospitalized in Verduno. For Fiorangela Ghiglio, resuscitation attempts were futile. The body was taken to the morgue of the Verduno hospital. As a sign of mourning, Monforte’s merchants lowered the blinds and turned off all the lights.
