Covid in Italy, Galli: because infections in us are less and less

[ad_1]

Is a big second wave coming to Italy?
I trust that does not happen. We need to be able to contain the new shoots.

Yesterday France counted 15,800 cases, Spain 12,000, Italy 2,000. Why these differences?
The situation in the countries around us is alarming. It is not clear why, but I have my own opinion.

Massimo Galli, head of infectious diseases at the Sacco hospital in Milan, helps us to interpret the figures and trends related to the coronavirus epidemic.

Professor, what did you say about the differences with other states?
My personal impression that the confinement as we have lived and suffered it, more severe than in other places, has limited the circulation of the virus in some parts of Italy. Several regions have not had new cases for some time. That radical intervention gave us a kind of wave of protection, but a fragile balance.

Yesterday’s report from the Higher Institute of Health explains that today the virus is circulating throughout the country and cases are increasing for the eighth week.
After an unwise summer in many parts of the country, there has been a resumption of infections. The virus never went away. The increase in the mean age of the cases suggests that the infection has spread within the family context. The numbers so far are sustainable. However, it is necessary to strengthen territorial medicine to contain outbreaks.

Will the reopening of schools make the situation worse?
The impact will be seen in the next two to three weeks. Now early: some of the institutes resumed their lessons on September 14, others after the voting. France reopened schools 15 days earlier. But I don’t think your situation is determined by this element.

A swab is provided for students with suspicious symptoms. Some families complain of excessive expectations about the outcome.
The complicated mechanism runs the risk of blocking everything. In fact, the parents are “in quarantine” pending the results. We need quick tests. I think of those who can find the antigen of the virus in the nasal discharge: they give answers in a quarter of an hour.

Along with infections, hospitalizations are also increasing …
The number of beds in general and intensive care beds as the tip of the iceberg. A small minority of those infected require hospitalization. But if infections increase a lot, this percentage also increases.

Has the virus changed?
It did not change significantly. The first wave was generated by a single viral strain, with a higher infectious and diffusive capacity. The point is the guest. If you are elderly and with pathologies, you can face serious consequences. Some studies, such as the one carried out in Castiglione d ‘Adda, also tell us that young people and children are less infected than the elderly. Important information for a less anxious lesson resumption. But if the child becomes infected, it can pass the virus to the family.

What do you think of returning to the company?
The decision to reopen and live with the virus was inevitable. It’s not a bad idea to keep working smart whenever you can.

And the one in the stands?
Opening a stadium to a thousand fans has no impact. I’d wait first before the numbers go up.

Should the state of emergency be extended?
There is no point talking about it now. We wait for October 10 to see what happens.
