Giorgetti: “Proportionality will be a disaster for Italy”

“The proportional one contains all the most negative and deleterious elements for a country that would need stability, certain governments, with deputies and senators who respond to citizens and territories.” This is what the Northern League player Giancarlo Giorgetti says in a long interview in Repubblica.
Giorgetti reflects on the post-vote, on the setback of the League, “I spoke with Salvini” and on the party regarding Europe. He voted not in the referendum, but four times in Parliament on the reduction of parliamentarians, but – he says – “this proportional law proposal was not on the table before.”
“Electoral laws – he continues – are made as usual for the use and consumption of those in charge at that time, thinking of doing something that is useful for those who do it.” What, it should be remembered, also did the center-right with the famous pig made in Calderoli. But anyway and Giorgetti admits the mistake of the past.

“An electoral law must guarantee a government that lasts the entire legislature – says Giorgetti – legitimized by the people and not the result of agreements and transformations in Parliament. And it should serve to bring qualified and unidentified MPs and senators to Parliament. An objective that can be achieved either with preferences, with all the distortions and potential influence peddling, or thanks to a system -which I prefer- with majority schools ”.

And that’s why he appreciates Prodi. And warns:

“Unfortunately it is not as Zingaretti says, to get the votes of Renziani and Leu they will have to lower it more. And in fact it will become purely proportional. It would take an opinion movement, as it has also happened in the past, to make it clear that the country needs strong governments legitimized by the people. To achieve this objective there are different systems: the law used for the Regions, the system for electing mayors with a vote, the Mattarellum ”.

And then he makes a proposal to the majority: “If they are afraid that we will win with the majority, that we rewrite the rules, we will do it as in 1946. An elected constituent assembly, yes, with the proportional one.”

On the post-voting of the League, Giorgetti opens the reflection:

“What the Lega proposes to Italy certainly must be clarified and refined. We discussed this with Matteo Salvini. It is clear that the blockage and change that has occurred in society requires reflection. We need to prepare a policy proposal. “We need to be inclusive and open ourselves to worlds that still view us with mistrust and suspicion. And if we have made mistakes, we must correct them ”.
